Letters to Soldiers

The community is our fighting men and women in the military; letters and pictures from children should boost morale and let these special men and women know we are thinking of them and supporting them.

JJ Express

Up to 2.5 percent of children and up to 8.3 percent of adolescents in the U.S. suffer from depression and the numbers are rising. The NIMH postulates that the increase in clinical depression may be due to the fact that there is increased pressure on youth to be perfect, as achievements become the norm. This is a serious problem, one that we have personally been affected by. We have decided to create a children's magazine called JJ Express that targets youth ages 10-15 years old.

PUMP IT UP!

Hello I am Radhika. I have recently posted about keeping the AIR POLLUTION rate low through keeping tires properly inflated. As we can see, it is a very simple idea. I came up with this idea while doing my Change project. I am a freshman and in my school, we have to do a benchmark project regarding environment preservation. I have always had a goal of publicizing the idea of lowering air pollution rate. I want to make this more than just a project and BUILD MORE AWARENESS TOWARD THIS IDEA. I have been assigned a team. There is two more students working with me on this.

Empower Females with Self-Enhancement Projects

We are trying to help others understand that you are never too young to be a role model. We invited other girls to start their own clubs throught the dosomething program. As a matter of fact, we sponsored the Gibbs High School Cheerleading Squad by buying a banner to promote our club or to start a DoSomething Club themselves.

Beautifying our School!

The fourth graders in the Logan Avenue Do Something Club have worked this year to earn money to purchase new trees for our schoolyard.  We had some remodeling done last summer and had to tear out some bushes and trees so we decided to help make our school look beautiful again by purchasing trees!  We held 2 bake sales to earn the money for the trees and then worked together with our principal and our counselor to plant them  We look forward to watching them grow!

Let's Get Fresh at Logan

At Logan Avenue School our students dont have the opportunity or incentive to try many fruits and vegetables except for things like lettuce, carrots or apples!  Although our lunch program puts a fruit or vegetable on each tray, the students are not required to eat it.  Consequently, LOTS of food is thrown away untouched!  We would like to help our kids become healthier and better able to make good choices with regard to their eating habits!  If we can do that, they may be able to take the knowledge they learned in elementary school and use it throughout their lives!

Spring Garden takes on recycling!

The Spring Garden Do Something Club is tackling the recycling problem in the lunchroom.  They contacted the public works departement and requested recycling bins.  During each lunch session, members of the club will monitor the bins and encourage children to recycle.  Each week, the members are responsible for putting the recycling out for pick up.  This pilot program is being launched for the fifth and sixth grade lunch program.  If it's successful, hopefully, we can bring it to the lower grades.

Wildfires Fundraiser

Thanks to many bakers and dessert contributions, the Brooks School DO SOMETHING Club held a bake sale during all lunch periods for two days, and has raised a total of $590.13.  All monies go to the American Red Cross National Disaster Relief fund to help those people who have lost homes in the California wildfires and other natural disasters around the country.

Winter Wear Drive

Brooks DO SOMETHING Club has collected winter wear for our students at Brooks who are in need.  We collected 19 hats, 27 coats, 7 snowpants, 15 scarves, 5 pairs of boots, and 28 pairs of gloves.  Teachers could choose from the available winterwear for their students who needed appropriate outerwear to be able to participate in outdoor recess and activities while staying warm and healthy.  All remaining apparel will be donated to Hesed House, a local homeless shelter.
