Project You're Never too Young to be a Role Model

The Dizney Debutantes of Knoxville, Tennessee have been busy building character! We are visiting many organizations to help with self-esteem. The main idea of our visit is to teach young children that you are never too young to give back to your community. Each of the members have agreed to try something that will boost their confience. As the president of our club, I had to set a good example of a role model and I tried something exciting. I did! I won a pageant and currently I hold the state title for a year.

Garbage Free Lunch

The Spring Garden School held it's first Garbage Free Lunch Day. Students were encouraged by the Do Something Club to bring lunchboxes, plastic containers, thermoses, and reusable water bottles. We challenged the students to have absolutely no garbage. We were successful. Over one hundred students participated. We are happy to report that we cut the amount of garbage in half. The custodian only had three bags of garbage that day. On an average, he has six bags! Not bad for our first attempt!

CHS Clean Fuel Initiative

Every school day, CHS students are transported to or from school either by bus or car. CHS runs a fleet of about 20 buses to transport bus riders from both CHS and CMS to thier homes. Each bus runs on either gasoline or diesel and most buses are more than 15 years old, making thier emissions high. The Clean Fuel initiative, sponsored by CHS EcoAction (http://chs.ecoactiononline.org) will work to change our current transportation.

It Starts With Us!

At Logan Avenue Elementary school we have a very diverse population, both socio-economically and culturally. Because of this, we feel very blessed that we have the opportunity to learn about and respect others right in our very own “backyard.” Although we do have such a “mixed” population, we are often painfully aware that many of us can sometimes feel that we have something to offer our world, our community, our peers or even the adults at school. Because of this we have decided to focus on the social and emotional well-being of all the kids at school.

Munchies for Marines

Our club baked desert-proof cookies and brownies for a Marine unit in Iraq. We wanted the men and women who are deployed from our area to feel connected to home. We are committed to letting these men and women know, that regardless of our political affiliation, we are supporting them

Our organization has been honored by Tiger Woods Start Something Program, Children's Hospital/Channel 10 News, Kohl's Who Care, Shoney's, The Postal Service, 3 Presidential Awards, and a Dizney Debutante Day Awarded by Mayor Victor Ashe of Knoxville, Tennessee on December 8th.

Nikki's Way

Huntington's Disease is a deadly disease that affects the lives of many.My name is Kristen Powers and my mom has Huntington's Disease. My mom was diagnosed with this disease four years ago and she now lives in a nursing home, no longer able to talk. Basically, HD is a terminal, genetic brain disorder that affects the victim's ability to walk, talk, think and reason. go to www.hdsa.org for more information. I have been raising money for HD research and I am working on a fundraiser dinner in my town.

We Remember You!

Our Do Something Club at Logan Avenue Elementary School have made some new friends!  We "adopted" the Memory Care Unit (Alzheimer's Unit) at the Presbyterian Manor in our community.  We will be making seasonal decorations each month for our friends.  We also plan to visit them in December to sing Christmas Carols and in the spring to plant flowers.  We are really looking forward to getting to know these very special people and hope they will smile and feel better every time they look at the things we have made!

Fill the Pantry!

The Logan Avenue Do Something Club has recently completed a "Fill the Pantry" project for our local Salvation Army's food pantry.  Our club collected about 500 non-perishable food items during this project and we feel very proud that we were able to help, albeit in a small way, our community!

Kindness Counts!

The Logan Avenue School Do Something Club felt that we should do something to help those families who were struck by the tragedy (tornado) in Greensburg, Kansas. These people really lost everything, in fact they lost just about the whole town, and we decided to do something!

Jennifer's Garden

One beautiful, sunny, afternoon in May, the DO SOMETHING club gathered in the back of Brooks Elementary school to perform a wonderful service for a worthy cause. Jennifer's Garden was started several years ago to honor one of our teacher's daughter, Jennifer, who was killed in an automobile accident. The garden was in need of clean up and re-planting ... which is exactly what we did. We asked for donations from Do Something members, and received over 40 plants that had been discarded or divided. These plants were planted by the Do Something kids.

Stuffed Animal Drive

The Do Something, Brooks! club decided to help a local Girl Scout who is working on her Gold Award. There is a contingency of people traveling to Paraguay this summer, and it has come to our attention that many/most of the children of this impoverished country have never seen a stuffed animal, and do not own any. We worked with Jessica (age 16) to organize this project. We set a goal of sending at least 700 new and gently-used stuffed animals to Paraguay. When all was said and done, we had collected 1,409 stuffed animals! That's 1,409 happy children in Paraguay!
