I started this school year on a warm, sunny day in Southern California. On Galveston Island, off the coast of Texas just 3 states away, there was no school to go to; it was in the process of being torn apart by one of the most destructive hurricanes to ever hit the USA, Hurricane Ike. The hurricane took the lives of hundreds, left thousands homeless, and caused $30 billion in damages.

My name is Mitchell and I’m a 17-year-old student/soccer player from Wisconsin. I started Peace Is The Goal as a goodwill initiative in October 2006 when I was 13 years old. This ongoing initiative aims to make the world a better place to live in by spreading the message of peace and giving through “the world’s game”, soccer.
Many kids in the world have little, if anything. They are desperately looking for something positive to do. They love the sport of soccer, but many don’t even have real equipment to play the game. Rocks, plastic bottles or garbage are often used as balls.

The problem with traditional flare use is that a box of 36 flares is approximately as much as or greater to $100.00 per box which doesnt even at times include shipping cost. Each flare when lit lasts approximately twenty minutes to a half hour meaning that given the cost it costs approximately $3.00 per flare. Once lit a traditional flare cannot be reused. Say you have a vehicle flipped over in the middle of the road at night time and you need to block the road on both sides of the vehicle.

"The Melissa Cole Show" intends to educate and empower urban communities on Long Island about environmental and health concerns that can be overshadowed by the overwhelming campaigns, resources, and efforts poured into the reduction of crime, the proliferation of drugs, or lowering high school dropout rates in these areas.

We heard on the radio that most low income children do not have any books of their own. We researched this and found that low income children have zero to two books compared to two hundred books for kids that are better off. We know how great it is to have books available to read and enjoy so we decided to start a program to read to children and let them choose their own book.

I am a tenth grade special ed. student with a disability. School is very hard for me and other students as well. The Transition Career Fair gives us hope that we can make it in the real world. We learn that even if we don't get really good grades, we still have skills and abilities. I know that without this fair I would want to quit school. I have friends that feel the same way. Last year 1,400 students came to the fair. The year before we had 1,000. The first fair only had 50 students attend in 1999. Lots of community business and collages are involved now.

The deadly earthquake in Sichuan, China (May 2008) affected vast number of people. High school students face great challenges. Even while the school has not yet been restored, these students are expected to cope with not only the aftermath of the earthquake, but also their schoolwork and the extremely competitive college entrance examination. Since English is a required course in high school in China and the students don't have access to English books, we would like to help The No. 1 High School in Dujiangyan, Sichuan build an English book section.

The village of Glen Ellyn, in DuPage County of Illinois is a fairly affluent community with an immediate population of 27,167 as of July, 2007. As the majority of our community members could be categorized as upper to middle class and are accustomed to high standards of living, it often becomes difficult for them to relate an environment where animals, particularly domestic pets are abused. Ironically, these community members so often unaware of the plight of animals, possess invaluable resources to combat this problem. Woofin’& Hoofin' realizes and understands the reality of this issue.

My project aims to educate my small, middle class, suburban society about the hidden truth that is domestic violence. The low level of knowledge that people in my community have about this large issue shocks me, and so I have played an active apart in trying to open the eyes of the people of Needham to how much domestic violence truly affects us all. By having high school students organize an event about such a mature issue bring light and attention to the alarm we are ringing about domestic violence.

The Chico Unified School District has terminated funding for high
school literary magazines; our student newspaper folded, as well. We are determined to keep our last student voice.
This year, as last, the Chico High Literary Magazine is wholly self-funded, and the staff conducts multiple
fundraisers throughout the school term. The last two editions, we have worked with bookstores, our faculty and student body, and the community at large. This year, however, we hope to expand
“Seven-Eighths Under Water” beyond the average 100 pages.

Currently, through One Laptop per Child (OLPC), durable, inexpensive XO laptops are being distributed to children in developing countries. While the introduction of such technology has created tremendous potential, one major impediment to the ability of the laptops to create transformational change is the lack of teacher support in the classroom. Specifically, there is a disconnect between the integration of the curriculum and the use of the computers.

Over the past year and a half, 5 major hurricanes have struck the US. Along with countless other natural disasters, these hurricanes have cost over $14 billion in city and neighborhood damage and repair, as well as taking away thousands of lives. There are many refugees living in Leander, Texas, and other Austin suburbs, but most of them are not living comfortably. In fact, there are hundreds of storm refugees dying each day, from lack of food, clothing, and shelter, the three basic human needs.

Tomato farm workers in the US are too often subjected to hazardous and unethical work conditions, as well as very little or no pay. Too many people live in extreme poverty because they are not payed fair wages for the work they do in picking tomatoes.
The Coalition of Imokalee Workers(CIW) has campaigned successfully for anti-slavery human rights campaigns and ethical wages for agricultural workers in the U.S., and the SFA has integrated their struggle from the fields to college campuses.

In 1993, The F.W. Woolworth’s store, the site of the infamous Greensboro sit-ins during the 60s, finally closed. The then current County Commissioner and a City Council member proposed to purchase the site in hopes of turning it into a Civil Rights Museum. Up until early this year, they were still “under construction/renovation” with no announced opening or finishing date. They had apparently seemed to be having financial difficulties as they had expressed the need for approximately 19 million more dollars to complete the project.
