The Sisterhood of the Traveling BDUs

We are military teen girls. Our community is filled with war, unity, uncertainty, and pride. Just as the nation felt the drastic affects of September 11, 2001, the fathers, mothers, brothers, and sisters rose up in arms to protect the nation. But what happened to those left behind? Did the media put a spot light on the internal and external harms of war on military teenage girls? The military community feels the shocks every time a bomb drops, the earth quakes, the tornado rises, and the waves crash upon cities.

Music is Medicine

The Music is Medicine project uses music to uplift seriously-ill children and creates a CD for them and their families with songs they wrote or inspired!

Needham's Annual Take Back the Night

My project aims to educate my small, middle class, suburban society about the hidden truth that is domestic violence. The low level of knowledge that people in my community have about this large issue shocks me, and so I have played an active apart in trying to open the eyes of the people of Needham to how much domestic violence truly affects us all. By having high school students organize an event about such a mature issue bring light and attention to the alarm we are ringing about domestic violence.

The Thirst Project (Clean Water for Developing Communities)

1.1 Billion people on our planet do not have access to clean, safe drinking water. (That is one in every six of us.) 4,500 children under the age of 5 die every day as a result of drinking contaminated water. (That's approximately one child every 15 seconds.) Over 80% of all world-wide diseases are easily-preventable, water-borne illnesses. These kill over 2.2 million people each year- more than all worldwide violence combined. Sound daunting? The problem is big, but the solution is easy.

Global Language Network - Building a Foundation for Global Communication

In today's global society the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately in multiple languages is more critical than ever and yet, according to national reports and surveys, Americans are suffering from a lack of foreign language skills: • A survey among US corporations has shown that 30% of large companies believe they have failed to take advantage of international business opportunities because they lacked employees with language skills and cultural knowledge and awareness.

Beyond Medicine

In the Puerto Plata province of the DR, thousands of Dominicans and Haitians live in poverty without adequate access to health care, adequate nutrition and housing, social services, or economic opportunity. Having participated in several week-long medical service trips to this region, we have experienced the challenges of addressing long-term health and social problems using short-term interventions. Medical service trips allow individuals to access health care, medicine, hygiene supplies, and for a few critically ill patients, funding for further care.

Everybody Dance Now!

Nearly 2,000 young people in Santa Barbara are considered at risk to join a gang, and the average age of a local gang member is 14. Youth face ongoing peer pressure with violence and gangs, drugs and alcohol, body image, etc. Everybody Dance Now! addresses an important need by motivating, engaging, and mentoring 850 youth so far, through a healthy outlet: DANCE.

PEACE IS THE GOAL

My name is Mitchell and I’m a 17-year-old student/soccer player from Wisconsin. I started Peace Is The Goal as a goodwill initiative in October 2006 when I was 13 years old. This ongoing initiative aims to make the world a better place to live in by spreading the message of peace and giving through “the world’s game”, soccer. Many kids in the world have little, if anything. They are desperately looking for something positive to do. They love the sport of soccer, but many don’t even have real equipment to play the game. Rocks, plastic bottles or garbage are often used as balls.

DiVA (Domestic/Intimate Partner Violence Awareness)

We are a group of students at Vassar College. At our school, Domestic Violence is an issue rarely discussed and, as a result, rarely handled well. Although the college claims to have a victim-centered approach and a well-functioning set of college regulations in place, victims of Dating Abuse on campus suffer as a result of the unacknowledged flaws in our system. Our group aims to spread awareness of this extremely prevalent issue on Vassar's campus and instigate change in our campus' response to dating abuse.

Book drives and book fair(s) to be held to help Earthquake victims in Sichuan, China

The deadly earthquake in Sichuan, China (May 2008) affected vast number of people. High school students face great challenges. Even while the school has not yet been restored, these students are expected to cope with not only the aftermath of the earthquake, but also their schoolwork and the extremely competitive college entrance examination. Since English is a required course in high school in China and the students don't have access to English books, we would like to help The No. 1 High School in Dujiangyan, Sichuan build an English book section.

Do Not Disturb - A Message On Teen Dating Abuse

I am trying to raise awareness of dating abuse. I want more teens to know the warning signs and have someone or somewhere to go to if they feel they have been victimized. I want to spread positive and empowering messages to those who feel stuck in an abusive relationship.

Community Emergency Response Cache

Most neighborhoods are not adequately prepared to respond to eventual natural disasters (earthquake, etc). My project would develop an emergency response site that would provide my neighborhood with a cache of a emergency supplies for disaster situations. The cache would include medical / sanitary supplies, communication equipment and search & rescue tools.

Natural Disaster Knitting

Over the past year and a half, 5 major hurricanes have struck the US. Along with countless other natural disasters, these hurricanes have cost over $14 billion in city and neighborhood damage and repair, as well as taking away thousands of lives. There are many refugees living in Leander, Texas, and other Austin suburbs, but most of them are not living comfortably. In fact, there are hundreds of storm refugees dying each day, from lack of food, clothing, and shelter, the three basic human needs.

crh- Knitting for Troops

The US soldiers are each away from their homes and families as well as not having access to all the resources we do. They are short in hygiene supplies and their food source is limited and continuously bland.

Leadership through Empowerment, Action, and Dialogue

Over population of prisons and the environmental hazards prisons create.
