Ashraya Initiative for Children - Health Outreach Program

The Ashraya Initiative for Children (AIC) began in early 2004 as a small group of concerned, dedicated college students working toward a better life for street children in Pune, India. Since the arrival of the first three children in June 2005, it has grown to house nine children in the residential program, and serve an additional twelve girls in its educational outreach program.

Musica de Mis Amigos

Arica is the northernmost city in Chile and has a large unemployed and impoverished population. Not many music and arts programs are offered in the city, in fact not many programs for children are offered at all. Underpriveliged kids don't have any opportunity for creative expression. Those who are priviliged don't seem to want to help others with their talents.

Asian Sensation

In our society today, there are many kids who do not have the chance to hear and appreciate classical music. This is especially true for inner-city children. We want to reach out to those children and show them how cool it is to be able to make music, even classical music using violin and clarinet. We want to show them it is a great way to learn to work as a team and it helps one focus and establish discipline.

the Bed-Stuy Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) project

I started the Bed-Stuy CSA, because families in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn are unable to purchase fresh vegetables in the neighborhood. This lack of access to fresh, healthy food contributes to the neighborhood’s significant health epidemics: according to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Health of Central Brooklyn report, residents of Bedford-Stuyvesant suffer a rate of heart disease 30% higher than the NYC average and are two times more likely to have diabetes than the average New Yorker. In fact, 1 in 3 Bed-Stuy residents is obese.

Wild and Water

Wild and Water is a nonprofit dedicated to fighting poverty through the sport of swimming. We hold free swim lessons for economically disadvantaged kids, teaching them not only how to swim, but how to be safe around the water. The inspiration for Wild and Water came while I was on a camping trip with a group of economically disadvantaged children from Atlanta, GA. I was asked to accompany the kids on a swimming excursion at the lake, and was horrified at what I saw. Kids who did not know how to swim were just jumping into the water, having no idea that they would sink once they were in.

IdeaTree Design

As students at an engineering college with a passion for making a positive difference, our interests lie at the intersection of engineering design and social responsibility. We view engineering as the art of solving problems, and already a host of problems—from education to appropriate technology—are topics in which we can make change, even as college students. There currently exists a gap in the design services these organizations often require; it lies between what they can do themselves and what they would take to a professional, big name design firm. That’s where we come in.

The CIW Garden Project

Women inside California's prisons have limited access to healthy food and exercise and they are isolated from outside communities. The garden project will solve a number of problems related to these issues. The garden will provide fresh produce and a rehabilitative activity for the women in the prison which will hopefully improve their physical and mental health. It also builds connections between the women inside and the outside community. This can give the women access to educational, rehabilitative and occupational resources that they would not otherwise have.
