The goal of this program is to provide a safe, fun place for community teens to meet and study, use computers, watch tv., eat, and learn about tolerance and diversity. Our metropolitan area had gang problems in the 1990’s. After school programs and Police Athletic League programs made great improvements, but the gangs have returned and are a threat to the community’s safety.

I designed and created five vegetable costumes: carrot, tomato, pea, onion, and corn. I then choreographed a dance to the tune of "We like to party". Four of my friends and I dressed up and went to the Chapel Hill Elementary school during their lunch period on October 19th(National School Lunch Week). We danced several times and talked to the kids about how important it is to eat vegetables and exercise to stay healthy. The elementary students loved our presentation. This is a project we can do yearly.

The mission of TeensLead, L.L.C. is to connect New Orleans area students and incoming volunteers to beautification and service projects in New Orleans; and to further develop individual leadership skills. We intend on achieving this through three goals. 1) Connecting local high school students with service projects in New Orleans. Most New Orleans high school students require service hours to complete their high school education. TeensLead will not only supply service requirements through separate service projects, but re-acquaint local students with their community.

School-based health centers provide underserved students with access to health care and medical attention. These health centers are particularly relevent in low-income, immigrant communities. Bertrand is a state-level advocate for school-based health centers and better food options in cafeterias. His lobbying helped pass the "School Health Centers Act of 2006" and got Gov. Schwarzenegger to promise more. He helps to educate new, upcoming health advocates.

When a tsunami wreaked havoc on Indonesia two years ago, the tragedy struck home. I, too, live in a disaster-prone community. Tsunamis, earthquakes, and volcanic eruptions are all highly plausible occurrences. I wanted to do something to ensure that if a natural disaster struck my community, families would be prepared. I looked for materials that would instruct young children on what to do and what to expect in an emergency. I checked the library, wondering if there were any storybooks about natural disasters, but found none.

Beaches are extremely polluted places, so I have been working to clean our local beaches almost every week. I also hosted the International Coastal Cleanup for our local beaches and several community cleanups. We remove all kinds of garbage like plastics, cigarette butts, bottle caps and other very detrimental items like rope, 6 pack rings, oil containers. These items endanger our wildlife and every piece of garbage disposed of properly may save animals, birds or fish from dangerous entanglement or perhaps indirectly improve our health.
