Sounds into Syllables- A Teaching System for Children with Autism

Autism is the nation's fastest-growing developmental disorder. Each year 1 in 150 children will be diagnosed with autism. There are almost 1.5 million cases of autism in the United States alone, with 3 children being diagnosed per hour (Autism Speaks, 2007). Most people have a friend or family member living with autism, and I am no exception. I have a ten year old cousin who is diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder. Watching her at family gatherings sparked a desire in me to help her find a way to cope with her autism.

Spread The Word

National Eating Disorder Awareness week is February 22-28th, which is when my project will begin, but it will not end until it is finished. I want to help spread the word about eating disorders, and how terrible they are. It's such an easy issue to ignore unless you have to personally deal with it. The sad truth is, eating disorders kill more teenagers than car accidents and cancer together. But, you see ads and campaigns for cancer and car accidents...how many ads to you see standing up against eating disorders? 0! Until Feb. 22. On Feb.

Lowering the Voting Age

The problem that I am trying to combat is voter apathy and injustice. If we can bring young people into the system earlier, while they are more likely to get involved, they might have civic responsibility instilled in them for life. Since this would affect young perople still in high school, it would be easier to educate voters about the issues and make a more informed electorate. The injustice that this movement combats is that in many states, young people as young as 14 years old can be tried as adults in court but can not vote.

My Own Book

We heard on the radio that most low income children do not have any books of their own. We researched this and found that low income children have zero to two books compared to two hundred books for kids that are better off. We know how great it is to have books available to read and enjoy so we decided to start a program to read to children and let them choose their own book.
