I live in a community based heavily upon our local hospital and medical center, the Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in the sweetest place on Earth, Hershey, Pennsylvania! The Milton S. Hershey Medical Center has one of the best Cancer hospitals in the country, and the pediatric Cancer program has a supporting program to assist children suffering through cancer and their families. By making and donating blankets to the young children with cancer, I am able to provide these children with comfort, security, and love in a time when they need those things the most.

I am trying to supply the impoverished communities in Jamaica with bicycles. There is so much poverty in Jamaica that people typically pay fares to use public bicycles or walk to get to their destinations. In America we take a lot for granted, when it comes to transportation. I want to "pay it forward" and make transportation one less stress that Jamaican people will have to live with.

In local Jacksonville, many gays and lesbians are discriminated for their sexuality based on who they are attracted to. Because a large part of Jacksonville is Catholic/Christian, many believe that it is against God to be a homosexual. I am a lesbian and yet still Catholic. I believe that God made everyone different, homosexual or not. We are all God's children.

The communities that I am helping include Cleveland Ohio and surrounding communities. The project also includes religion communities, youth groups, schools, and sport teams. Many times, people don't realize how cold and lonely a hospital can be, until they are faced with a life threatening situation. I wanted to provide those suffering through life threatening illness with a little comfort. I also wanted to teach others the importance of helping those around them that might be less fortunate then themselves.

At our school we are trying to reduce energy use. To promote this we copied the light switch covers sent to use by DoSomething.org and are placing them in every classroom.

In low-income communities the immediacy of day to day needs often overshadows thoughts of planning ahead and saving for the future. This project addresses the importance of teaching middle and high school students in Apopka, Florida how to manage money and save for their futures. About one third of Apopka High students are eligible for free or reduced price lunches and one quarter are non-native speakers of English. Many students are unfamiliar with financial institutions and the concept of saving money.

Give a Kid a Book will address the issues regarding literacy in poverty stricken communities by personally distributing age appropriate books to children in the communities. With these actions, the volunteers of Give a Kid a Book feel that they will promote literacy, provide reading materials in home environments, and encourage parent involvement with reading at home and with his/her child/children.
