although the government did a lot to help with the situation, they missed a lot of things. after katrina, the first two foreign countries to offer help were Cuba and Venezuela. they offered a million dollars, several mobile hospitals, water treatment plants, canned food, heating oil, 1,100 doctors, and 26.4 tons of medicine. however, because the cuban and venezuelan governments are enemies of the U.S. government, Bush did not accept their help. Also, it was recentley discovered that state governments were holding back some supplies that were "not neccessary," but would have been incredibly helpful if given to the appropriate places.
A friend of mine was just down in new Orleans--the pcitures from her trip are horrifying. I can;t believe it is still such a mess. this will be one of the embarassments of our country--100 years from now.
we spent $1 trillion on iraq...but spent pennnies on new orleans.
our country's priorities have been way out of wack!
be the change!
No if we had acted after katrina hit and swallowed our pride to accept help the people in New Orleans and New Orleans it self would be ALOT BETTER OFF!!!
Well I am from Louisiana, central Lafayette two hours away from New Orleans. New Orleans is still a huge mess and you can practically still smell death there. The 9th Ward is still a mess the whole city is. And New Orleans isn't the only ones who were effected. The government didn't do much for the Lake Charles side of Louisiana for Hurricanes Rita or last Gustav. I remember having mandatory evacuation for Hurricane Gustav, nothing was severely damage back in central LA. But, sure there was A LOT of damage in the Western and Northern sides of Louisiana, yet the government did not do much to help out the people there. They mainly talked about New Orleans, which is NOT the only horribly bad effected ones. My point is the government did not really do anything to help out for hurricane relief down here. Too worried about the war...
And marrymejoejonas...
New Orleans will not be an embarrassment to the U.S. you used wrong choice of words. Some people will take that the wrong way and it is rude. However.. New Orleans is getting cleaned up and looking better even though we it is over 3 years. New Orleans will not be an "embarrassment to the U.S." never ever.
well i live in virginia and im only eleven so i have no idea what yall are talken 'bout
I have been New Orleans lately to work with those affected by Hurricane Katrina. While it is true that they still have a long way to go, they are really a close community and they are getting a lot done. With or without the government's support they have a lot of volunteers and a hope that they will rebuild something better than they originally had.
I know everyone is totally gonna hate me for this but...
Louisianna had it coming!
what did they expect?
that town is a known hurricane fest, and its a known swampy area.
If those people truly cared about their safety and the government cared about them to begin with, they would have never allowed people to live there in the first place!
It was also a well known theory that one day, New Orleans and Florida may one day collapse underwater. What in the hell made people move there, beats the hell out of me.
I know, I know. The scenery, the food, the music, the atmosphere. All perfectly good reasons to move somewhere that you love, but also you should consider the health riskes and life/death issues that may come along with that place.
That's like a person packing up to move to Baghdad cause they love Indian women, and food, and culture- but only to get there and get shot and blame the government. What did they expect? that's a freakin war zone
hmmm true. I feel bad about what happened to the people, but the state really did have it coming
dude wfh?!!?!
