RE: agnostic in a catholic school
Just out of curiosity, why do you go to a Catholic school if you're not Catholic? As for the girl…

Should people be more concerned with giving impoverished people ways to support themselves (ex. schooling, training, places to sell things they made) or giving them food for a short period of time so they can hopefully find ways to get food on their own?

I think both. If a person is slowly dying, they would need fish to live. However someone or some organization also needs to step in and hand them a fishing rod, without taking advantage on the fact that the person does not know how to fish yet and exploit them, such as the global corporations paying cheap labor and causing families to live at the end of poverty even with a job
Sure who is going to pay for the organizations to do all of this, are you willing to give 50% of your future wage to see this all happen? real world here
Global corporations are evil as we can see above, how dare they give someone a job and pay them a legal wage.
Not all jobs are made to be career jobs, you are not suppose to raise a family on a job at mcdonalds or entry level jobs at walmart, these are stepping stone job positions mainly jobs designed for 16 to 25 year olds.
There are organizations that do both immediate care and long term training. Yet, not all impoverished people wish to take advantage of training programs, and others are not mentally sane enough to finish a program or hold a job.
Sure, large companies in the U.S. may provide cheap jobs, but you must also remember, those jobs are being kept around by the consumer. As for corporations who employ those abroad, sure they may provide horrible conditions and exploit workers, but often those people prefer the job to no job. The book "What Matters," by David Elliot Cohen explores this along with many other issues.
I am just throwing out information, Keep discussing!
