Is music poisoning the minds of teens and other youth?

Kids at my school listen to music that promotes sex, drugs, gang violence and abuse. I think this music poisons ours minds with those thoughts. It angers me that IDIOTS are being PAID to tlk about crap and instill these msgs in our heads. how do u feel?

"Evil triumphs when good men do nothing"-Edmund Burke

Music is not poisoning the minds of youth if you look for the right kind. I feel like there are certain artists that do have obscene content in their lyrics, but many youth listen to this type of music for other reasons besides the lyrics. I believe there are artists out that there that have something to say that is worth listening to. Many kids listen to the music though and they misinterpret the meanings of the songs which has led kids into do certain things such as commit suicide. People can percieve art in a bad way. I believe that aspect is really cause by other elements besides the art itself though. It really depends upon things that are happening in their lives. And if you are going to blame art for all the problems in the world, then what about sports, politics, and war? People wanted to blame Marilyn Manson for the Columbine Massacre, but at the same time they were accusing him the president was dropping bombs on civilians. It all sums up to one thing...compassion. A reporter once asked Marilyn Manson what he would have said to the two young men responsible for the Columbine Massacre. He said, "I wouldn't have said anything. I would have listened."

so u honestly think that music that promotes violence is ok!? r u serious? Yes i have "listened" to the lyrics and i find there is no dept or anything very much artistic about it. i think that the idiots that make this msic should nt b allowed to share their music to the world and most importantly the youth

I think that music with obscene lyrics can influence that type of behavior if they make it sound beneficial. Like an ad for a certain brand of cigarettes. But not all music is bad, for example, T.I. and Eminem have some songs with actual emotion in them.

i knw that

I think music is poisoning the minds of the youth. We listen to rap, hip-hop, and many influentual music genres. But in my opinion what happened to good old soft pop and Christian music. I think if you listen to the song How Great is Our God by Chris Tomlin you would enjoy the Christian Music.

To me T.I. and Eminem are very influentle in a bad way. To me I do not like rap so that might be why I don't like them..

Music is NOT poisoning the minds of youth. In fact, I believe that it is making us better people, but only if we listen to music that isn't obscene. There are so many amazing musicians and writers that have something great to say that can inspire us. Even though people might not like the Jonas Brothers, some of the money that was raised by people liking there music and buying there merchandise goes to Diabetes research. Also, what about all of the money that went to AIDS reaearch on the season finale of American Idol? Good things can and do come out of music.

I believe that our choice and content of music is so poor because we the people allow it to be. We the consumer should turn off the radio. Many people support the terrible music by just having the radio on.
Support the cause by talking about it. The more conversations we (the people) have on the issues that bother us, the bigger the impact it will have on our world.
Our parents have failed us. When I was really young my parents mediated everything we listened to and watched. Now you might say that sucks, but i can tell you that by having parents that cared enough to monitor and judge for us what we should be hearing and what we shouldn't, definitely helped put my siblings and I on a better path in life.
What does a kid at 7 and 8 really know. Parents need to take personal responsibility for their children listening to these songs and acting this way because of music. Teach a child to distinguish right and wrong, good and bad. If you understood right from wrong, then the content of the music wouldn't even matter.
We should definitely stand up to the artist that produce songs that promote the wrong type of unity between people and deliver a corrupt message. ALso, the Media is the biggest area of corruption. STOP FORCING US TO WATCH THE CRAP.

ok i have to admitt it does to some kids. but to most of them not really. and i should know because im eleven. i listen all kinda music and im a most staight a student.

music is not poisoning the minds of kids. I mean, Im here on dosomething trying to make a diffrence and i listen to obscene music. Music can express diffrent kind of emotion. i mean my parents raised me not to shoot or hurt people who dont like me. People have enough since to know right from wrong. if you hear something and u do it well u shoud have known better. if someone told u to jump of a bridge would u do it? Ive listen to all types of music. There are some that r just crazy stupid and pointless but music is good for the soul.

Well I personally don't listen to degrading music but the fact is that some do. I don't think having people listening to that kind of music is bad as long as they don't imitate what they hear or see. The fact is that everybody likes different kinds of music and some like degrading music.

well i do think that explicit music can b bad becuz when u listen to it most ppl hav the impulse to do what the song is tlking about. We as ppl relate to music so when u listen to it those lyrics make u want to feel as good as those ppl did at the time or revisit the time when u were sad. so if all u r listening to is about sex and violence then thats what u r going to want to do and probably will act on it

I find that when you listen to music, as a teenager 90% of the time it is honestly background music and youre not listening to it thoughtfully, so you see the surface and dont look any further. If you actually sat down and listened to a song, looked for the actual meaning, it wouldn't be as horrible as you're making everything sound. Also there are many genres of music that do not have obscene music, and all genres have music that some may find obscene. That is what today is. But never ever in my life would i ever say someone should not be allowed to spread their music to the world. As a musician myself wanting nothing more than people to listen to my music i couldn't wish that upon anyone. no matter their style. Its freedom of speech and freedom of expression. They may release the music, and ultimately really, you have the choice, dont like what they're saying DONT LISTEN TO IT. plain and simple as that.

So, personally, I actually get a little bit offended when adults, or just people in general, attempt to scapegoat the problems in society in a way that denigrates creative expression. Sure, some kinds of music talk about things that aren't benificial to society or the individual, but I find it a grave insult to our intelligence to insinuate that music "poisons our minds". Creativity is cut off at the neck when those in power believe that the results of creativity, music in this case, incite chaos and mass hysteria... Now, of course that is going to the extreme and I understand that, but the oppressive values that dictate education and society will go to that extreme. In no way should anyone ever be forced to stop creating music/literature/art etc. because someone not directly involved finds it "wrong" in some way. To that extent, I agree with Valkyrie.Eternity; "you have the choive, don't like what they're saying DON'T LISTEN TO IT."

Think now or forever hold your bliss...

Yeah, but some people don't have the sense between right and wrong, and they take music as their guide. Music is an influence, but you can choose if it is a good or bad one. Music is what got me on this site, but it is an influence all the same...

I know where your coming from. I don't listen to the songs my friends listen to because there's like 50 curse words in it. Even the F word. And they said they love the song. And now at my school more kids are getting in trouble for cursing. I think it's because they heard artists sing it and then think it's cool.

I think that if these kids are listening to music, their parents should listen to it before they do that way the kids don't have to be exposed to this bad stuff, and, believe it or not, but some parents either don't care or think that this music with bad stuff is cool. I also think that a lot of modern rock and pop stinks. Why don't other parents show them Pat Benetar and Guns N Roses.

in my oppionion i would suggest talking to your principal about the issue. it is a very common and unfortunaly a very commonly ignored issue also.

Ok, first of all, if one's music choice is causing them to make bad decisions, then no, they shouldn't listen to it. However, that should be a decision made by the person, not another. It is important for anyone, especially teens to be able to express themselves, and part of that is listening to their choice of music. Second, there are usually alternate reasons to listen to music, beyond the lyrics. Some might listen to a violent or suggestive song, only because they find the beat catchy, or because the type of music makes them feel good. Also, many songs with suggestive lyrics aren't using the terms literally. Many songs will use obscenity as a metaphor, to get a point across. This is a major form of peaceful protest. As for me, I listen to a variety of music ranging from Opera to Rap. There are suggestive lyrics in many of the songs that I listen to, and I get good grades, obey the law, and don't perform violent acts. Music is free expression, and shouldn't be banned and/or screened from a teenager's life by a parent or relative.

It drives me crazy that people actually listen to suggestive/provacative music and do the things they "sing" about. The music people make these days is being targeted towards teens and kids and it's making drugs, alcohol, sex, etc. seem cool and completely okay. But then again, music is expression. It's a way of thinking and feeling. To me, music is everything. If you listen to songs with lyrics that have meaning and purpose, then you could learn from it. Sometimes when a person listens to a song they just think it's catchy or really like the beat. So in a way, I agree that THAT type of music is poisoning our minds. But it's not all music.

Well i have a huge feeling on this topic due to the simple fact that A: I am 24 years old and in most ways consider myself a youth B: I am a Lyricist in the Hip Hop/Rap world C: I speak openly about my past experiences and the music that influenced alot of those issues and finally i see the absolute need to change the music industry in my opinion as a whole and i am proceeding with a grand plan in the year of 2012 and foward in order to accomplish this monumental task. I was arrested at 18 for grand theft, home invasion, and use of a fairearm in the commission of a felony. I was in jail for 6 months until A higher power than myself gave me another chance instead of a lengthy prison term of 28 years. I got a 1 year Drug rehab sentence followed by a 3 year felony probation sentence. My immidiate thought was "alright i got away with prison" it didnt change my outlook or mindset on the whole education part of the prcess of change. Time took its course and music was a huge influence with my sobriety and my mindset began to change. So did the music i began to listen to ironically. Yea it was still majorly hip-hop/rap but i pulled away from a majority of the Artists in which their lyrics were about the same thing that i just went to jail for. I began writing my own lyrics at the age of ten and they were formally based in that dark world but i noticed that with this jail time and consequences the lyrics were changing to a positive standpoint pointing out the negatives that i went through specifically and everything that i had lost because i wanted to fit in with a crowd that was percieved as cool because that is what the music industry was spending billions of dollars on advertising. BIG MONEY BIG CARS BIG GUNS BIG VIOLENCE JEWELRY etc...this was the reputation of a street thug in the rap industry and you couldnt be BIG in rap unless you were apart of that mold...Basically what this all boils down to is that i listened to these artists and follwed thier lead and it got me no where and now at 24 i have a mission that will be in full swing within the next few months that will literally change the face of music and the culture as a whole...Positive hip-hop maintaining that swagger and that coolness that lucrative spirit of fitting into society while not being negative all at the same time...Gangs target the adolencence through music because they dont know any better and by the time they are able to grow and think for themselves it is mostly too late weather it be death or long term jail sentence or fear of being unaccepted and not knowing where to turn. No adult in thier right mind aka Sober or well off would even think of turning to a gang for help nor would they listen to meaningless music that supports that gang mentality. Parents are scared for thier children of what thay are learning in school when they are not around to supervise them. They have a hard time censoring what thier child has in thier I-pod so i feel that as a musician my self it is my responsiblility and duty to formally change my music to besomething that hte youth will listen to, respect, follow and parents to be able to support. I will use subliminal messaging for positive and proactive things instead of industrial greed for money. Thats where i see that the problem lies so i reach out to all people and cultures alike for support because if the children wont listen to thier parents because naturally they see thier parents as not so cool per-se but they will listen to a complete stranger that is respected due to thier standing within an industry and a society then it is my job to teach them well and be that role modle......That is the true definition of responsibility and i am the figurehead and spokesperson of change because i have lived that life and now i live a different one and its all firsthand knowledge....please e-mail me at chris_chall@hotmail.com for responses support ideas and so on reach out to me as i reach out to you and together we can and we will change this world as we know it....We can do anything we put our minds to like we were told as children....thank you

Sincerily Truth_in_words

I dont think its poisoning young teens minds, I am 14 and i listen to a lot of rap, and I say no because i consider rap as people telling about what they have been through. For example, My friends and I mostly listen to songs that we can relate to or how we are feeling. I no for a fact that no teen will be stupid enough to listen to a rap song about how this guy was doing drugs for an example, and try to follow that guys foot steps, meanwhile the guy just said he almost lost everything because of it. Meaning his family and his future. So, its not effecting us in a bad way, i think it more as showing us from right or wrong.

I haven't seen anyone being encouraged by the lyrics from songs nowadays. I think that young teens are listening to the beat and melody rather than the lyrics, but agree with you. I don't understand why we encourage these artists...
