I've started volunteering!

I just started volunteering at an animal shelter. They have 13 dogs and around 60 cats! I work with the dogs most of the time. I get to take them on walks. One of the dogs, Matilda, acts like she's been abused. The leash got behind her leg so I walked towards her to try and get it out, so she lies down and rolls over onto her back in a submissive position. The first time I worked with her, she wouldn't even let me take her on a walk. She would just lie down, so I ended up just sitting on the ground and petting her for half an hour.

Anyone else volunteer?

I can't, becuase I'm only 14. No one will let a 14 year old volunteer. :( Any suggestions? I live in New York.

Me too, I live in NEW YORK, and it can be tricky to finding ways to help out, i mean, in my town my school says, VOLUNTEER! But then when you try to, there like; "um.... YOU'RE to young.", or no one even tries to do anything. ^^^^SAME THING^^^ If you have any suggestions, please post!! THANKS!

I really want to help animals in shelters, but I believe I am too young. Does anyone know any good ones I can sign up for once I get older? o_0

This website might help you to find local shelters http://www.pets911.com/index.php

If you can't find anything that works for you, just wait a couple of years until you can do it, otherwise adopting animals and giving money to help out is really good too.

If your too young to do actual work, you may be able to do small things to help. Offer to help by taking pictures of shelters pets to make slide shows for your myspace or website. If your shelter doesn't advertise their animals on petfinder you can help with that. You can start a pet food drive or sewing club that makes dog beds and donate them to a shelter. You could design fliers to put up in public places, start fundraisers at your school, or shadow people who do volunteer so that you will be ready when your old enough to join them. There is pretty much no limit to indirect help if your creative.

my nana's dog, sasha, was like that when we firat got her. all she would do was sit in the cornor and she would shake like crazy. it terns out she was abussed.

I'm so glad to know that there are people out there willing to take their time out and help animals! it means a lot.

Alli Cat has a great point. Showing your commitment to a local organization can be a way to assume a larger role and gain their trust. I would also suggest doing fundraisers and collections to help spread the word and allow you to get in contact with the organization's leaders when you go drop off donations. When I was younger I did the same thing. I collected items through a bin in the front of my school and sent a paper home to kids in my classes. I began volunteering at my local Animal Shelter when I was eight. They saw my commitment to the cause which then let me show them my maturity and responsibility. The second time that I stopped by, I adopted a kitten and asked if I could volunteer once a week, and they let me! So, be persistent, most age rules are just to filter out the majority of kids who they assume will just cause trouble.

Also, go to the top of this site and click on ACT NOW in yellow. There are four questions that you can answer that will give you suggestions and how-tos in order to get involved with this great cause!

If your family is dedicated to the cause too, you should ask your parents about being foster families for young puppies and kittens. You can work with local shelters and volunteer to raise kittens and puppies until they are old enough to be adopted!
