Should public schools be required to teach medically accurate sexual education?

...do you feel that it is important? Should the government make it a requirement?

It's important for people to be accurately informed on the issues surrounding us today, especially those that effect our generation.

Yes, it is already apart of some schools curriculum with health class, but it doesn't cover sex extensively. It may be in a chapter or two. But yeah, school is about education, there needs to be classes about subjects that affects students such as drugs, and sex.

of course it's important! we had a somewhat decent sex ed class taught through health and PE classes in my high school. the problem was is that nobody really took them seriously. there's a lot of stuff i still don't know about sexual health which is scary to me. youth need to know how their decisions are going to affect them and they need to know how to stay safe. there's a LOT of info out there we just need to get it into the hands of the youth!

There's extensive proof that abstinence only education DOES NOT prevent kids from having sex. I say that, yes, abstinence should be taught as the only fool-proof way of avoiding pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, but comprehensive sex edu should also be taught, including specifics on how to use a condom!

Completely! I know in my school, there really isn't much Sex Ed at all. They teach us more about drugs than about condoms and birth control. I know tons of people in my school who think that you can not get pregnant when you loose your virginity and then they end up pregnant and wonder why or how it happened. I wish that there was better Sex Ed at my school and schools like mine because a lot of teen pregnancies could have been avoided with just a little bit of information.

Definitely! Youth cannot make informed decisions unless they have all the information. The sheer amount of misconceptions out there about sex blows me away.

Most certainly. Reproductive health is an important subject and deserves to be given its due attention. All above me have made wonderful points.

Yes of course, I don't think that you learn enough about that in elementary school. As much as this is gonna be hard for some people to hear and accept, the age for "teens" become sexually active, well lets face it, getting younger and younger and having them miss informed just doesn't help. To have sex in a healthy relationship you need to know the facts, know the risks, and talk to your partner. You need to know your own body and understand whats going on, and you most definately need to know how to practice safe sex properly because we don't want to sky rocket the teen pregnancy rate any more than it already is.
Live to dream.

I BELIEVE THAT IT IS EXTREMLY IMPORTANT FOR CHILDREN TO LEARN ABOUT HIV/AIDS IN SCHOOLS SO THAT THEY MAY KNOW THE RISKS OF HAVING SEX WIHTOUT PROTECTION. NOT SO MUCH TO SCARE THEM BUT TO MAKE SURE THAT THEY ARE AWARE OF THE CONSEQUENCES!!

I think that it is very important for schools to include proper sexual education in their cirriculum. The abstinence program has failed many times. If kids don't want to abstain from sex they just go ahead and do it with knowing how to protect themselves and without knowing the consequences of their actions. The value of protecting yourself should be known by every single teenager, sexually active or not.

My old middle school (public) is teaching the students sex ed. One i think they are waaayy to young in the first place, and two they are being taught by a Catholic Church that comes in to volunteer. My younger friends always tell me about how the nuns are very biast on things. I think public school should be taught about these things but only 8th grade and up. The government should also say that it has to be taught by a non-religious group.

All I have to say to that is DUH!! If schools dont give proper education who will? Most people never get the sex talk, or if they do they get it from friends. Also false info could lead to bad discisions. Its much safer for the student body if the school provides accurate information.

Yes especially today in this day and age. It one of many leading concerns for schools. Teens and kids deserved to be informed and prepared and program medically accurate sexual education can support that.

Oh, oh, oh, yes!
My school pretty much told me this:
"The tadpole swims to the smiley face and that is how a baby is made."
I was 10.
Lucky for me, I knew about sex prior to this.

High school hit and they pretty much only taught us abstinence.
Our Senior class was about 680 people.
40 of the females had STDS. Males I do not know.
1 of the Seniors got pregnant in 9th grade.
3 in Sophomore year. One of them again in Senior year.
By graduation 14 females had children. 20 graduated pregnant.

yes yes yes!!!!! very important!!
