Should your race/ethnicity be kept anonymous when applying to college?

Many complain that certain people are given unfair advantages/disadvantages due to their race or ethnicity when applying to college. Would it eliminate the controversy by having people's race/ethnicity be anonymous when applying to college? What would be the pros/cons of this?
-Your friendly DoSomething intern.

i think it should. because some colleges try to diversify based off of race, and others exclude because of race, it would be much more fair if race was not accounted for.

I think it should because i feel it isn't fair for someone to receive special consideration because of their race.

yeah, definitely. it shouldn't matter where you come from, and what the color of your skin is. everyone is basically learning the same way.

I think it should be kept anymounous even I would want to get into a colloge because i earned it not because the school policey says there has to be this number of blacks , hispanic, asian, white . Its not fair too the person who is going to the colloge because of the race or the person who diserves it . If you really want too get into colloge dont use your ancestors use your brain and your talents!

I think you should'nt have to say your race. What does it matter? If I want to get into Yale, and have a perfect application, it should'nt matter if your "white or black or whatever" Whenever we do stuff in school involving you to say your race, I put that I don't want to answer that. It should'nt matter. AT ALL.

i think it should for diversity purposes especially because it gives minorites a lot of help when applying to schools, and regardless the person is smart and brings something different to the school its not just like oh your hispanic so your getting it people have to work for things as well

In my opinion it should be based solely on the applicants success in high school and through out the community

i think it should be kept anonymus, simply because so many college applications are turned down because of the one blank that says RACE: ___________ i mean seriously, we all have a brain, and if the application is good, who in the world CARES if the person is black or white or hispanic or "other", another issue that bothers me is that "other" by the way... but anyway, i know a WHOLE LOT of black, hispanic, and "other" people who are WAY smarter than me, i am white, and sadly, they have less chances of gertting into a good college because of their skin...
but then again, on the other hand, i think it is simply horrible that it needs to be kept anonymus in the first place.

I think so to. Visit stidham88.wetpaint.com

why should things be any different from applying for a job. college and jobs both have the same potential as to how they can affect your future. i don't think that race should ever come into play no matter what aspect of life you are dwelling on. descrimination is discrimination no matter how you look at it. it affects children and adults alike.

Definitely. Race means nothing. Dark, light; Black, white. It's a color. Look in a crayon box, you'll find many more.
As long as the person qualifies to go to that college that they applied for, what does it matter what their race is?
Plus, what if that college is one of those diverse colleges, and you have as much smarts [maybe more] as anyone who goes there.. but you have the wrong color skin.
Martin Luther King Jr. settled this.
You can thank him.

Parisgirl13, I agree with you. What's with this "other" thing? Lol. I'm half black, half white. And, frankly, I'm tired of putting "OTHER" on EVERY STINKIN TEST I TAKE.
It annoys the crap outta me. lol
Just thought I should say that :)

I think it should be kept anonymous, deff. I mean, if it wasn't on the application what so ever, then wouldn't that fix the whole affirmitive action arguement? If colleges don't know someones race, then they can't be accused of discriminating, but you know that people are there because of the work they did. I agree with what iloveyouu2108 said, about how race means nothing. The color of your skin doesn't reflect how your brain works, so why should it reflect on your college app.?

this is about the "other" thing
i completely agree! i mean, most of the people in this world are half something and half something else in this world!!! they should have to choose between one or the other! and have you noticed that there is never "aisan" or "native american"? hello! there is more to people than the color of their skin! or ethnicity as they say on some tests...

Having people's race should be anonymous in any situation really. I mean for example, a while back I remember having to fill out on the PSat what ethnicity I was and I realized how stupid this really is. I honesty don't see what the point of placing people in categories is going to do anything to help anyone.
--Unfortunately though, race would probably always play some role in deciding things, just like how much money you have.

I think it should just so everyone is safe from discrimination

I think that people should be able to put their race on applications for college without worrying about discrimination, but maybe Im asking for too much.
Why can't people just get along? Aren't we all human?

I believe we should be able to put our race on college applications but if that effects peoples chances of getting accepted into college then I would rather take the step of not putting it on the applications.

I think putting your race/ethinicity on a college application shouldnt really matter. So who cares if your whatever race you are? Its not like teachers/staff/students are going to be allowed to treat you any different than other students of an opposite race/ethinicity. If being prejudice against someone based off of there applications, by just words on a paper, then why have colleges at all? If trying to separate certain races/ethinicity's then what was the use of listening to Matin Luther King Jr.? Wasn't his speech about rasism, and how its wrong? Peace is what everyone needed, and peace is what we received. So with even the tiniest bit of matter such as, race/ethinicity on college applications, being a problem...
I dont think it should make any difference to anyone.

*But that's just my 2Cents.

I say keep it anonymous, because really, if you are smart and want an education no matter your race or whatnot. You shouldn't be denied education no matter what level of education it is because of that. I feel that we all say, no racial descrimination, fact is, we don't practice the acts of not descriminating those of different races enough. If we did the question wouldn't come up. Just becaue you're another skin colour than majority doesn't make you any less intelligent or any less determind to do well and succeed in life. Why does it matter if you're white, or black, or hispanic, or asian? If you qualify, you should be accepted. No questions asked. Race has nothing to do with what's on the inside. At all. But that's my opinion.

i think that most colleges have that question in order to sure diversity exists. its your choice as to decide if you want them to know what race/ethnicity you are.

everyone makes excellent points. what is race? and why does it matter? to be judged just based off of race seems ridiculous, but unfortanetly, there are many things that are just plain out outlandish. i agree that it would suck to not get into a college just based off your race, because that school has already met their quota of whatever race you may be. however, I would HATE to go to a college that was not diverse.

I would defenetly keep your race a secret from the collage you want to apply to. The only thing that can give out your race is you name.

Think About It...

I think that color-blindness is the way to go. It shouldn't matter where you come from. Credentials should decide who gets accepted and denied, not a need to meet racial quotas.

I believe in affirmative action. I believe that everybody regardless of race, sex and or religions should have and be judged by the same criteria WITHOUT race, sex or religion playing a role.
What I am saying is, affirmative action is actually a PC (politically correct) way to be racist and/or race biased towards one race over the other and that is Racism in the purest form.
Why is it ok to say “I will be racist to you in order not to be racist to him/her?” “Why is it ok to judge one person by their color, sex or religion in the name of not judging the other by the same criteria?” This opinion is not only mine but rather one of many scholars, professor and thinkers alike in all “racial” sector or communities.

All people deserve to be judged EQUALLY! People should be judged based on qualification for the job and or task at hand.
Education is available to all!

To keep it plain and simple yes. If you want equality then make for all the races not just the colored ones.

yes i think it should be anonynous it dosent matter hiw many black or white kids they have what's important is that they are educating people

I say no, there is no reason to disclose the information. One way or another a person is going to see your color, or form their own idea of what your background is, from your name. It is shameful for us to hide our identity. I honestly believe that the racial barriers will dispel in time. America in a generation will be so mixed that people won't be able to tell a thing about a person. This will force them to really look at your background and who you are on paper.

Of course race shouldnt be considered in a application, Just like it shouldnt be considerd in the work place, affirmative action should be overturned in all places of society.

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!! If race REALLY didn't matter, nobody would make you see which one you were. I would just ask if you can speak the language on the country where you're going to college . . . it doesn't really matter where you're from or what color your skin is. But I just know that I'll be the one checking "Does not want to reveal this information" when I have to do it.
