The Power of One

Back to 'Education' forum.

I just have one question for everyone on dosomething.org why are we all competing?

I know this may seem like a stupid/weird question at first but just think about it we are all essentially on a team (the DoSomething team) but as individual players we are competing for either the most donations or for more people to join our causes. For those who watch basketball a Kobe Shaq like situation. Now I just want to ask you how much more effective we would all be if we "moved" as a unit. I know in some senses we are ( example all people for the fight against poverty are working together and all the people against discrimination are working together) but just think how much more we could achieve if we put implemented just a little bit of strategy. When I say strategy I do not mean war like tactics lol but what I do mean is that we must have a plan one that focuses on groups of individuals rather than plans amongst individuals themselves. "After all there is strength in numbers." To do this we must have places dedicated to DoingSomething within our communities. All it would take is one building, one building where we could host meetings. One building that could act as our source for income to fund our different causes (through services like recreation, education, discount stores all which help the community as well). One building that we can use to house our various causes (say your cause is providing bikes to the poor well now you already have a place where people can donate bikes and where you can store those bikes, maybe you just want to raise aids awareness and help fend a cure well then you would have a place to hold your meetings and fundraisers, or maybe you want help find homes for abandoned or mistreating animals once again you would already have a place to start from and funding to start with). The only problem some of you might see with this idea is that if everyone joins together than how is one building going to be enough to "satisfy" all of causes. The answer is simple we just make it community/city/state specific that would spread our efforts but still keep us working as a team and since we are all on the "same page" we could use each other’s space and when one "center" has no room to offer we could go to our next closest. Also note that most causes do not even require physical space or a room to effectively work and most only require space renting and not permanent space. I really hope that you will see how beneficial this could be and how the possibilities are endless when we come together as a team. No one can change the world themselves but together we stand a chance and together we can truly DoSomething. I just want to end by saying to whoever is listening what does your local community center really do and how much of an impact would be made if WE replaced it with This True Definition of a Community Center.

Not to rain on your parade, but even a single building would take thousands of dollars (a month) without going through the correct government grants, and even with those grants in place, there's no guarantee that we'll be able to show significant progress to keep that grant. I understand it would be useful in numerous ways, but the DoSomething team does cover way too much to try and utilize one building for all of it. That aside, the money it could conceptually take to get the building could be better used towards advertising and/or site development. No, I feel that this would work better as an informative site to link to other resources/projects. Maybe if it were to grow substantially.

Also, competition is healthy. No one said you can't work as a team to obtain your goals, however ;]

That is correct and definitly a valid issue but the I have had time to think about this and instead of creating our own buildings we must update our current community centers and use those. The community centers are already operating and if they really care about bettering the community they should be open to any and all ideas that would help them achieve their goal.

Community Centers seem to never be updated and never really come up with any programs outside the norm. Where does all the money go?

Competition motivates people to work, rather some one has the image of doing good at first or not, eventually they will see for themselves.

competition is good-especially here since we're all fighting for a good cause and in the end millions of people will be greatful.
