Why can't I find anywhere to volunteer when I'm 14?

Does anyone know of shelters in New York City that accept 14 year old volunteers??

no. but i know how you feel. im finally 16 and im so happy i can volunteer FINALLY.

Thanks for your reply. If you do come across somewhere, can you let me know? Out of curiousity, where do you volunteer? In New York?

I know how you feel, im also 14 but i cant find anwhere to volunteer except for the Humane Sociaty. I volunteer in California :)

there are somethings you can do i just volunteer for children & youth and im 14 so you can do something you just have to find it somewhere

Maybe instead of a shelter, you should try contacting various rescue groups. Generally it's 14 and up with rescue groups, and even if you can't work with the animals, there is always something to do. I started with posting flyers for super adoptions, and creating descriptions for the animals up for adoption. I was just barely 13 when I started.

I found this website through google: http://www.volunteermatch.org

Once you are at the site, all you have to do is type in the state, city and what you want to volunteer with, and it will pull up all the organizations that are in your area. Then you can call each one and ask if there are any projects you can do to help the animals (behind the scenes, if neccesary!).

BTW, I am 21, and have volunteered in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Anchorage, AK.

Actually, did you guys know that you can find volunteer opportunities specifically for teenagers right here at Do Something? It's really easy too! Just go to dosomething.org/volunteer and type in your ZIP code. You'll get tons of volunteer opportunities right near you; you can even sort the results by distance and cause! Good luck, and let us know if you have any questions, we're always happy to help =)

Thanks so much for all your help!

Thanks so much for all your help!

i dont know but that sucks cause im eleven! CRAP!!! but i do live in virginia

Exactly my problem!! My friend and I tried like 10 shelters in the area and the only one that accepts junior volunteers is almost an hour's drive, and the requirement is once a week! Of course, the parents vetoed that... so we're back where we started. :(

it probably depends on whate state you live in but i wouldnt think "volunteering" would be considered work, as the law doesnt either, thats odd to me you cant find anywhere to volunteer...do you have a human society in your state? they usualy except younger people.

HUMANE* sorry, lol.
