I attend a very small and quaint school in the middle of nowhere! The student population in my high school is 729 and only 181 are seniors like me. I visited my local market and collected 33 boxes and distributed them to my schools third block classes. Prior to passing those out I wrapped each with blue or red wrapping paper. I offered the third block that brought the most an incentive; and of course it had to be food! I also made flyers that I passed out and hung on the walls of my school. I researched thoroughly and found some alarming statistics about the children that attend the boys & girls club. I shared these with my fellow classmates through conversation and announcements over the intercom daily. Each day I would go and write announcement pertaining to my drive and they would all have at least one statistic about the children or the club. I signed up to receive a package with advertising gadgets from the Do Something team. I received a banner in that package and I hung it in my school’s cafeteria lobby. The local newspaper caught wind of my drive and wrote a story on it. When they showed up at school much to my surprise, I gladly posed beside my banner and filled the reporter in on what I was doing. My drive started last Monday Oct 10th and it ended yesterday Oct 19th. I had a goal to collect 100 pieces and fell just TWO short ending with a total of 98 pieces of new and gently used equipment! Having fell short of my goal doesn't alter the pride I have for the overall success of this because I gave back and was able to help out people who are in need. This has changed me dramatically. It’s not about materialistic items or having the most there is to have it's about changing the world starting with the little things such as this. My goal was to earn a scholarship through doing this but it's not about that and I am glad this project has made me realize that. Regardless of the fact that I am chosen for the scholarship, I will still be finding things to better the lives of others. It was such a pleasure doing this. The satisfaction of knowing I helped someone out is and everlasting award.
