Step Up FAQs

FAQs

  1. Why “Step Up?”

Because bullying sucks! And because 160,000 kids stay home from school each day to
avoid being bullied. Studies show that bullying stops within 10 seconds the majority of
the time when a bystander intervenes, which is why we’re encouraging you guys to move
from standing by to stepping up!

  2. What’s an action step?

An action step is what you’re doing to Step Up to Bullying. It can be as simple as telling
a friend to quit saying mean things about one of your classmates or simply offering a seat
at the lunch table to your dorky lab partner. We know you guys are wonderful and super
generous, so we can’t wait to hear all the creative ways you’re Stepping Up to put an end
to bullying in your schools and communities!

  3. Okay, I told you what I’m doing to Step Up to Bullying. Now what?

When you share your action step, you’ll be eligible to receive our sweet footprint decals.
If you elect to get the footprints, we’ll send them directly to the address you provided
    when you opted in.

  4. What do I do with these cool footprints?

Slap those bad boys down in the places you’ve Stepped Up to Bullying! Then snap a
pic of the footprints in your hallways, on your lockers, on the sidewalks, in the cafeteria
(basically wherever you’ve stepped up) and post it on the microsite or send it to stepuppics@dosomething.org.

  5. How long does the campaign run?

The campaign will run from September 1, 2011 through October 31, 2011.

  6. Will my personal info be public?

Heck no! The only info that will be displayed publicly is your first name, and we’ll never
share your hometown, school, or contact info unless you give us specific permission to do
    so.

  7. What the heck is a cause coach?

By participating in DoSomething.org’s Step Up to Bullying campaign, you’ll have
your very own cause coach who’ll be there with you every step up the way to answer
any questions and help make sure you’ve got everything you need to take action! Your
cause coach will contact you using your preferred method of communication (i.e. text vs.
    email).

  8. What is this map all about?

The Step Up to Bullying national map will track the locations of your action steps. When
you tell us what you’re doing to Step Up to Bullying, we’ll use the zip code you provide
on the sign-up form to represent where you’ve taken action. The goal is to show where
you guys are stepping up, which will allow us to pinpoint where bullying is occurring
    most.

  9. What is The Bully Project?

The Bully Project is an upcoming documentary from award-winning director Lee Hirsch. This spring, we'll be continuing our work around bullying by working with The Bully Project team to turn the film into an ongoing movement. Stay tuned for more updates about the film and when it will be available in theaters near you!

  10. How can I win one of these awesome campaign scholarships?

Everyone who takes action in the campaign and reports back (i.e. you report back by
telling us what you’re doing to Step Up to Bullying) will be eligible for one of our
$500 campaign scholarships. Recipients will be determined by DoSomething.org’s
Scholarships Team. Please visit our Campaign Scholarships FAQ section for more info.

  14. What is DoSomething.org?

First of all, how do you not know us by now?! Regardless, we’re happy to introduce
ourselves to you. DoSomething.org is one of the largest organizations in the US that
helps young people rock causes they care about. A driving force in creating a culture
of volunteerism, DoSomething.org is on track to activate two million young people in
2011. By leveraging the web, television, mobile, and pop culture, DoSomething.org
inspires, empowers and celebrates a generation of doers: teenagers who recognize the
need to do something, believe in their ability to get it done, and then take action. Plug in
