See It: The Community being helped
I few weeks ago I went to the aquarium in manteo, the north carolina aquarium, to volunteer. I was there "shadowing" someone in the husbandry department feeding some of the water species there. Some of the time when i wasnt with bret i sat at the touch tank with fred a regular volunteer who educates the public about the sting rays, hermit crabs, etc. When i was with Fred he taught me all about the sting rays and how friendly they really are. Did you know that the only reason a sting ray will attack you is if you stop its motion by grabbing or stepping on it?? i didnt. When 3:00 rolled around it was time for their feeding(which not to brag, but i got to do). As all the people gathered around the tank he began his lesson. He told them of the different kinds we have in the aquarium and he told them about where they live at. What i didnt know was that they live right around the beach, and that they come up to the shores offten. They also get cut and hurt by litter in the ocean and on the shore and many die when they get caught by a fishermen because they dont know how to handle them. There's a certian place where they inhabit most often, i'm not sure what they're called but when you look off the bidges up there you see them areas with grass and water i want to call them a marsh but am not sure if this is the correct term. I want to inform the fishermen of how to handle stingrays and to not fish in the area which they live. Mostly though i want to clean up the beaches not just for the sting rays but for all the animals in and around the ocean, including us humans. I think though that not only should we clean the oceans and beaches but our own towns and cities. Look at the side of the road next time you get in the car. All you'll see is garbage everywhere. My dream is to get together and clean our road and teach awarness about the danger of the garbage. The litter is hazardous to those animals we see/hear and love.
