My project will be helping the veterans at VFW Post 2017. The project will heavily rely on reorganizing items in the three storage areas in the post. Many of the items on first inspection of the project seemed broken. When I asked Mike Figlioli, the Post Adjutant, if those items could be thrown away, he told me that much of it can. Representatives from both groups using the storage areas will need to go through the items before we discard anything. New shelving will be built to replace the old rotting wooden shelves.

After all of the items are taken out of the storage areas, sorted, and/or discarded, we will build new shelving to be used in the spaces. Most of the currently existing wooden shelving in the closets has rotted. These shelves must be replaced for the safety of veterans that use them. Once the items from the storage areas has been sorted, the remaining useable items will be taken out of the plastic trash bags and soggy boxes and put into durable plastic bins.
This project will be done in early 08 when the hall rentals drop off and it easier to reserve the hall for a weekend day. I anticipate that this project will take about a day.
Items to be provided for volunteers include: face masks, gloves, and trash bags to secure the items before removing them from the area to place them into a dumpster (provided by post).
Letters will be sent to Lowes, Dunkin Donuts, Home Depot, and Eastern Bank asking for donations to fund my project. The materials needed for my project will include wood, nails, and power tools for shelving, trash bags, and a dumpster for trash, and extra funds for what ever can not get donated. Also, there will be reminder fliers to give out to troop members, family and friends, as well as members of the organizations involved so that they can save-the-date on their calendars. Final project is a 8x3x3 foot replica of the Eiffel Tower. This tower was made to stand as a topiary for a specific kind of French rose. The tower was constructed of Red Cedar, stainless steal decking screws, and garden fencing. Today the tower stands in The International-Friendship Gardens of La Crosse, Wi as a symbol of the bond of friendship between La Crosse and one of its sister cities: Épinal, France.

Project Details

My name is Ian and this is my Eagle Project details. The refinishing of the underside of the roof structure and a building overhang at Holy Cross Lutheran Church will involve removing of rotting wood, patching, priming and painting. Left unchecked, the church could lose the beams which would require complete replacement of the structures. I will be working with the real estate committee of the church to determine paint color and the angle for the cutting of the beams. I will be asking for volunteers from troop 924 and Holy Cross Lutheran Church. To raise funds for this project, a donation box will be placed at Holy Cross Lutheran Church and the church is willing to donate money to the project if needed. I will also be asking for donations from local business and to borrow equipment from volunteers “ladders, saws, gloves, ect.”

For safety, all the volunteers working on the project will wear safety glasses and gloves (latex/leather). Also earplugs and dusk masks will be necessary for those sanding and cutting. I will be supervising safety for all aspects of the project. I will have two adults cutting the ends of the beams off; they will have experience in cutting with power tools. We will also be using a power sprayer for prepping the area. For the hard to reach places to sanding/ paint, the volunteers will use ladders and I will get scaffolding to make it safer.

Through out the prep and work days I showed the volunteers the project and explained what the objective was. Then I demonstrated how the safety gear was to be used including, the dusk masks and how they were to be put on and worn while sanding. Also I supervised the volunteers by making sure they were being safe and I answered any questions they had.

For my Eagle Scout Service Project, I plan to do work at the Church of the Nazarene which is located in Lower Nazareth. Near the front entrance, I plan to make a large memorial garden. The church is relatively new and although there is minimal landscaping currently in this area the pastor thinks it will be a good area for a garden and gathering area. Some of the existing trees and shrubs will be utilized. Other low maintenance trees and/or bushes will be added. The entire area will be covered with decorative stone with a defined walking path and benches for relaxation and prayer. Finally a large cross will be erected as a focal point.
