As any good Rent fan knows, there are five hundred twenty-six thousand, six-hundred minutes in the year of a life. But the rock musical has raised way more than that in its 12 years on Broadway for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS -- approximately $2.8 million to date.
Now they're asking Rent-goers to help them top $3 million before the show's last performance on the Great White Way this September.

One of the reasons cited for the bringing down the final curtain is said to be the irrelevance of a show that highlights young artists and bohemians living in New York's roach- and squatter-infested Lower East Side neighborhood. With the area now an up-market real estate mecca -- and with Whole Foods replacing the myriad vacant lots -- the Alpahbet City of Rent, and its once-thriving, gritty La Vie Boheme vibe, is long gone.

Unfortunately, the one piece of Rent that lives on is its permeating theme of AIDS as an everyday reality for young people.
Some scary facts about AIDS in 2008:
- Every 15 seconds, someone between the ages of 15 and 23 is infected with HIV. Most sexually active young people don't think they're at risk.
- One-third of U.S. teens did not believe condoms are effective in preventing HIV. Other than abstinence, condoms are the most effective way to prevent HIV transmission.
- Young women are especially at risk for HIV. Only 1 in 5 can correctly identify ways of preventing HIV transmission.
Last night, the Do Something staff visited the Nederlander Theatre to take in the show; for many, it was our second, third, or fourth time. However, it was just as sad and exhilarating as our first viewings, with the show raising awareness for a number of social justice issues and presenting a diverse cast in color, gender and sexual orientation. Popular American Idol finalist Tamyra Gray was a standout as the sexy and hopeful Mimi who is deteriorating from the effects of AIDS.

After the final bow, Tamyra and several castmembers asked the audience to give whatever they can -- from loose change to $5 to "diamonds!", as Nicolette Hart (a.k.a. Rent's performance artist Maureen) suggested.
