homeless youth awareness

"STOP THE CYCLE"

"STOP THE CYCLE -08- CAMPAIGN"... This campaign deals with different social ills that have been plaguing the nation for generations, general and personal. Force yourself to look inward and ask yourself, "Does the way I think, feel, and/or act come from a cycle of my family or society"? Sometimes who we are and what we do in life is seared into our gene pool, sometime it’s a learned behavior, however if it’s causing destruction vs. construction then something needs to change.

TeenFeed-Teens Fighting Teen Hunger

What do you know about teen hunger? NOT childhood hunger, but teen hunger. Not much? I'm not surprised. While a silent epidemic of food insecurity rages within the population ages 13 to 19 nationwide, little specific data exists and outreach for this group is minimal.

Homeless for the Homeless

On November 16-17, Columbia, SC participated in "Homeless for the Homeless". There are about 1,565 homeless people in Columbia, and the idea of this project was to try and get 1,565 students to represent each homeless person. The volunteers stayed out all night in the cold, to try and live the lives that the homeless have to live everyday. It got below freezing, and we had layers of clothes and sleeping bags, so we could only imagine how cold it must have been for them. The next day, we broke up into different teams, and went on community service projects.

Food Not Bombs

Food Not Bombs is an international movement with groups in all parts of the world including; Mexico, Asia, Africa and the Middle-East. These autonomous groups collect food from super markets, bakeries, restaurants etc that would otherwise go to waste and serve it to anyone who is hungry. All the meals are vegan-friendly and we encourage recycling, health and conservation through the act of providing these free meals and through speaking about these concepts at our servings.

Breakwater Teen Shelter: Run for Shelter

Hello, my name is Alexandra Grotton, and up until about 4 weeks ago I was a resident of the breakwater homeless teen shelter. Every year, for the past 2 years, the breakwater teen program has held an annual Run for Shelter. The run helps raise much needed funds for the program. The funds that are raised, are used for things such as: Clothing vouchers, food for the day program, activities that teach youth to work together, outings, art supplies, and so much more.
