Kids Off The Block, a prominent community based youth organization in the Roseland Community of Chicago, IL, has ignited a passion across the city in response to an epidemic of youth violence that has claimed the lives of our children in the past year. We are embarking on our greatest challenge yet, the launching of our Citywide Campaign called “Save A Teen / Do Something”. This new Youth Anti-Violence Crime Prevention Campaign will develop sustainable processes and relationships that will address the violence, and social conditions that face youth in Chicago and across this nation.

My group will create an eductional video to show on bronxnet and at school assemblies.Drugs and Education will be our theme. The video will be a documentary focusing on the life of a high School student(s) and thier experience of abusing drugs such as Marijuana and Alcohol and/or a dealing with a family member or friend who is abusing drugs.

Q'eros Video Project

The Q'eros Video Project began in March 2007 when two filmmakers from the US collaborated with an activist from an indigenous community in the Peruvian Andes. Together, we began a video education project in the remote mountain community of Q'eros, introducing basic video production skills and exploring how the technology could be used to support the communities of Q'eros and their goal of sustainable development.

Since being started by an adult, Judy Shasek, Get Outta My Face (GOMF) has been trying to get kids to eat healthier and exercise more because America is the largest nation in the world. I joined the project in May 2007 after winning a film festival with a partner. The film that won was a stop motion video called "Punk Da Junk: The Journey of Epic Nutrition." It was made for the 72 hour shootout, which it won, and it actually took 31 hours to make with only two people working on it.

The morning chill shakes my bones, a warm body tosses and turns next to me, the blanket itches my dry skin, and I try to squeeze my eyes shut to get at least another hour of sleep in before the sun comes up. Someone sniffles a few feet away and I hear HJ whisper uncertainly, "Renee, you up?"
"Yes"
"It's like freezing," she chatters.
"Just imagine if we slept like this every night"

East Side School Video

I was part of a project that created and produced a fund-raising video to support saving the East Side School in my home town of Decorah, Iowa. It was built in 1897, and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The video was used to show to people to encourage them to give a pledge of support for the renovation of the East Side School. The fund raising effort was very successful. My role in the project was as spokesperson on the video. On the video I gave a tour of the building and interviewed people who had ideas for programs that could be used in the school.

Watch this incredible video about how residents are still dealing with this disaster 2 years later. Sign the petition urging the Senate to pass the Gulf Coast Recovery Bill of 2007 (S1668). The bill is expected to come to a vote after Labor Day. Its passage will be an important step toward rebuilding the infrastructure in the Gulf Coast region.
