ADOPT-A-FRESHMAN
(A community service fundraising project)

“Hi, I’m Ariel Nixon, a 10th grader at PGISD. Over the years, I’ve watched my parents help students going to college by providing them with basic items ranging from soap to microwave ovens. I also understand that most scholarship/grant awards are limited to academic needs such as books and do not cover basic needs. It is statistically known that the freshman year is the toughest year in college because of so many things a student must adjust to. I too will be a freshman soon. I believe that with the financial support of our community, we can help a freshman student have a successful year.”

MISSION ▼

To raise $2000.00 to be distributed evenly among 4 local high school graduating seniors who will be first time college students living on campus during the fall and spring semester of their freshman year. I’m the originator and the project leader of this special student aid award called Adopt-A-Freshman. This award is under a non-profit organization I created called SmilecolorsAN. Adopt- A- Freshman is designed to help graduating high school seniors who will be upcoming freshmen attending a four year college fall 2008. This award will provide one senior from each of the four local high-schools with 500 dollars during their freshman year. The award will go directly to the students.
To recruit community members/sponsors (i.e. small businesses, agencies, churches, and individuals) to make financial donations to this project.

GOAL/PURPOSE ▼

- To help minimize the lack of essential
supplies needed by freshman student for daily living

- To help avoid the idea of trying to get a job which
may demand more time from their studies

- To help freshmen understand the importance of learning how to budget

- To avoid taking out an unnecessary loan

- To help contribute to their success both academically and socially while
being away from home

- To help minimize some of the expense placed on
parents with very tight budgets

- To continue to set an example that encourages and
promotes giving back to your community

Help launch www.TeenAmbition.org, the online magazine for people who have dreams, goals, and a desire to make a difference. TeenAmbition provides a forum for young writers, business owners, and community leaders to share their stories.

This project was started to help young adults improve their financial literacy. Anyone can learn about money, business, and the economy. These topics impact everyone’s lives, yet few people take the time to understand them. A fundamental knowledge of these issues can make it much easier to succeed in almost any venture.

A project directed by Village Help for South Sudan, Inc.
This website is focused on providing financial assistance to the people of the Wunlang Village in southern Sudan, Africa.
In Wunlang, the children sit outside under trees on long branches because they don't have a school building. They lack basic necessities such as school supplies and desks. During the rainy season of May to October the school is closed. Also, during the dry season of December to May the school is closed because it is too hot outside.
Our long-term plan for the Wunlang School Project includes raising enough money to construct an actual building for the primary school. This structure would include eight classrooms and two offices for teachers. We also plan to provide supplies, clean water, and food support for the school; uniforms and shoes for the students; a school health clinic and housing for guests and teachers; and a computer lab to introduce technology to Wunlang and connect students with their counterparts in America. The World Volunteer Project is something that I have been trying to develop and raise funds for, ever since I have returned to my first volunteering trip to Ghana. Any funds that I raise for this project will help me return to the orphanage that I worked at in my time spent on the west side of Africa, everything else that I can raise above the amount needed to return for 6-12 months will be spent on the children and adults who need it.

A small amount of money can make a huge impact on the lives of people who need a little extra help. Mattresses for the children to sleep on or money to send them to boarding school can make an extraordinary difference in their lives. The time I spent in Ghana has given me the insight and knowledge to be able to put money to good use and effect change in individuals, so that they can change the masses.

I plan to work with orphanages as the main priority of the project, secondary will be adults in surrounding communities. There are millions of orphans in Ghana, unless someone helps them, they will be lost to the uneducated whims of the world. Although it is difficult, and maybe even impossible, to help all of them. It is worth the while to try and help those of whom you can.

EYE (Engaging Youth Entrepreneurs) for Change is an organization dedicated to making sure youth ages 13-25 have the opportunity to develop an entrepreneurial attitude, high financail IQ, and leadership skills. We offer three main services:

EYE for Change Conference: an annual youth entrepreneurship conference that encourages youth and those working with youth to engage in entrepreneurial skill building, financial literacy, and leadership skills. April 3, 2008

EGTS Tour: a traveling tour that features an interactive address by an authentic entrepreneur, entrepreneurship competition, lunch and access to resources for students to get their businesses started.

EYE Societies: creating a network of youth entrepreneurs who pursue entrepreneurship as a career option, employ entrepreneurial concepts to remain competitive in the workforce, and utilize entrepreneurship as a vehicle for change in their respective communities.

EYE for Change also has a radio and TV show entitled EYERadio and EYETV. EYERadio brings together youth entrepreneurs to talk about what’s hot in youth entrepreneurship and business that’s shaping the world. In addition, EYERadio focuses on innovative business ideas, entrepreneurship as a new career option and using youth businesses to help shape and mold communities.

EYETV is hosted by motivational speaker Quinn Conyers of Speak2Society, LLC. The show features an interactive exchange between the host, youth and seasoned entrepreneurs. These entrepreneurs showcase their products, share and discuss their challenges, and inspire their peers to be dynamic business leaders. The show will uncover the youth's opinions on entrepreneurship and how to turn an idea into a profitable business.

Financial prosperity remains an allusive dream for many young Americans. I am working on a pilot program that will help teenagers from lower income families learn business and financial skills. The project will involve placing youth in leadership positions of small corporations established just for this purpose. Successful business leaders will help guide students through the entire business cycle. Participants will learn hands-on how businesses operate and experience an unparalleled level of responsibility. This training ground is the first step in facilitating the financial success of America’s youth. Upon completion of the program, people will be eligible for microfinance loans that can be used to start their own businesses with the continued assistance of skilled mentors. This program should inspire teenagers and give them the necessary skills to achieve success. America’s youth can attain financial prosperity; they just need some help and encouragement to realize their full potential.

Girls and Guys on the Move - GOT M, is produced by Emerald Greene. It is a talk show that features youth promoting all aspects of life surrounding youth. We speak about fashion, health, social issues, culture, world news, and specifically how we can change the present state of negative images in the world. There are so many ways that we as youth can make life better for the future. There are a lot of parents that have neglected their children and we try to understand the plight of the homeless youth, the street gang mentality, the safe sex issues, the drug use and the educational decline in this country. I need to be able to produce my program and get my program on as many outlets as possible. But because I am not financially able to I really need assistance. I would be so so grateful if many more adults cared about what we teenagers have to say and how our input can help shape lives. Girls and Guys on the move, GOT M will take you to another level, bring the young and the old together, and enlighten and enhance you with the best that we can possibly promote. The next generation of youth will not be called generation X, we are generation next.
