Donate Your Hair for Cancer Patients
Try a new hairstyle to help cancer patients!
No, seriously!
Locks of Love is a public non-profit organization that makes hair pieces for children under the age of 18 who have lost their hair. The hairpieces that they make retail for $3,500 to $6,000. Because of the high cost, Locks of Love was created to provide hairpieces to those people who could not afford them otherwise.
Cancer patients who undergo treatments like chemotherapy or radiotherapy can lose their hair, and that’s when Locks of Love can step in. If a patient has long term or permanent hair loss, the organizations provides him or her with one of their hairpieces, and for short term hair loss, they can provide synthetic hairpieces.
Do you have really long hair? Then consider donating it. Not only will you get a mini-makeover, you can feel great about doing it, and then inspire others to do the same.
Here’s how to make it happen:
Some Guidelines:
1. 10 inches is the minimum length, from tip to tip. Synthetic hairs and wigs cannot be accepted.
2. Hair can be colored or permed, but not bleached or chemically damaged (ask a hairdresser)
3. Hair cannot be swept off the floor.
4. Even if your hair was cut years ago, as long as it has been kept in a braid or ponytail, it’s okay to donate.
5. Unusable hair (too short, gray, and/or unsuitable for children) will be separated from the ponytail and sold at market value to offset the cost of making the hairpieces.
How to donate:
Step 1
Make sure you have at least 10” to donate. 2 inches are lost in manufacturing, so being able to donate 14-18 inches is ideal. If your hair is curly, pull it straight to measure it.
Step 2
Get sponsors. This is NOT required in order for you to donate your hair, but it’s a great way to also donate money to Locks of Love so they can make the hairpieces. [click here] for a PDF version of a donation form, and ask family, friends, and neighbors if they will donate a certain amount for each inch you donate.
Step 3
Call hair salons around you to see if any of them participate in Locks of Love. They may send the hair in for you, or even give you a free hair cut! HOWEVER, you can get your hair cut ANYWHERE, by ANYONE.
Step 4
Before you go to get your hair cut, wash it, dry it, and pull back into a ponytail or braid. When you send your hair in, it must be clean, dry and in a ponytail/braid. If your hair is layered/has different lengths, pull hair into separate ponytails according to similar length.
Step 5
Cut it! Make sure it stays bundled (in a ponytail or braid).
Step 6
Measure the length, write the length on a plastic bag, and put the ponytail in the plastic bag. Send the hair to Locks of Love in a PADDED envelope, along with the hair donation form that you can get by clicking [here].
Step 7
Show off your new haircut and tell your friends about it! Encourage your friends to donate hair too. After they see your awesome new look, they won’t be able to resist
OR, TRY THIS!
See how many friends you can recruit to cut at least 10 inches. Plan a "Hair Drive" and see if a local hair salon would be willing to join in and cut hair for people who have pledged to donate their hair. Ask people for a $5 donation, and see how much hair and money you can raise!
