Allie's Army

I am going to solve the problem of Type 1 Diabetes. There are 23.6 million people in the United States, or 8% of the population, who have diabetes. The total prevalence of diabetes increased 13.5% from 2005-2007. Only 24% of diabetes is undiagnosed, down from 30% in 2005 and from 50% ten years ago. Liquid Love Rave Project

University of Delaware (the university I and several of the others involved attend) is known for its parties, and the problems associated with the drugs and alcohol that naturally coincide with them. What if there were an environment that provided the same kind of dancing atmosphere as a rave, but without the danger of drug use and excesses of alcohol? What if this place could create an atmosphere that successfully filled in all of those places people tried to fill with alcohol and drugs?

The Birthday Party Project

The mission of The Birthday Party Project is to celebrate the lives of children who are living in marginalized communities or suffering from recent emotional trauma through bimonthly surprise birthday parties and other forms of appreciation. We reach out to children who are in transitional living; in single-parent or foster homes; immigrants and refugees, etc. We hope that our efforts illuminate the transformative, healing power that is the joy of inclusion.

Girl Scout Troop 403 Silver Service Project 2007-2008

Me and my girl scout troop cadettes want to do something for disabled children in our community. The city has all kinds of fun events but there is not an area where the disabled children won't get trampled. Specifically we decided to do an Easter egg hunt and party. Our city puts on a huge egg hunt every year with thousands of eggs. The disabled children can attend but they have to participate with their age group of non disabled children.

Style Your Sole

While on a trip to Argentina last year, Blake had a vision to put shoes on children's feet around the world. To date, TOMS Shoes has given away 10,000 pairs to children in Argentina and is preparing to give 50,000 pairs in South Africa. Style Your Sole is a great time for you and your friends to get together, express yourself through your own designs and support a good cause. Whether it is the theme of your party or a community building activity (youth group, sorority, birthday party), you and your friends are putting shoes on children’s feet somewhere around the world.

Big Brothers Big Sisters Club

As of now, I am working with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Frederick County, my high school, and Do Something to start up a Big Brothers Big Sisters Club. I have recently recieved approval from Do Something to start this club and hope to get things underway in early September once school starts. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a community organization that pairs underpriveledged children from the area with mentors. While the mentors are usually adults, Frederick County's BBBS organization has a major shortage of willing adults. Because of this, they are offering teen mentoring programs.
