Every year over 7,000 AmeriCorps members strengthen NYC communities.

AmeriCorps Week is a recruitment and recognition event designed to bring more Americans into service, salute AmeriCorps members and alums for their powerful impact, and thank the community partners who make AmeriCorps possible.

AmeriCorps Week provides an opportunity for AmeriCorps members, alums, grantees, program partners, and friends to shine a spotlight on the work done by members in communities across the country—and to motivate more Americans to join AmeriCorps or volunteer in their communities.

Play For The Planet

I would like to start a sand volleyball tournament and cook out at the Band Shelter on 23rd Street in Bettendorf, Iowa this summer. There are two courts there, so we could have two pools of teams playing at once. The champion form each bracket would play in the end. ALL MONEY EARNED WOULD GO INTO BUYING TREES, which would be planted around the city. I am going to try to see if Wallaces Garden Center (or some other local garden center) will sell us trees for a discounted price. If possible, I also would like to hold a barbeque for any hungry people nearby.

I am currently volunteering at a brand new community resource home titled the House of Hope. The House of Hope of Ocean County, Inc. is a non-profit, interfaith organization which assists individuals and families achieve and sustain self-sufficiency.

CHICAGO WALK FOR PKD - Volunteer Opportunities

The PKD (polycystic kidney disease) Foundation is looking for dedicated volunteers to help in the planning and execution of local Walk for PKD events. We are searching for highly motivated and responsible people (of all ages) with the ability to coordinate the Chicago Walk for PKD fundraising event (on Sept. 15, 2007 at Busse Woods Forest Preserve Grove #6 in Elk Grove Village, IL)for a national non-profit foundation. Event planning experience would be excellent preparation for this volunteer job, although not required.

Opp-Guide to Community Service Opportunities

The Opp-Guide is a community service guide designed to educate and inspire middle and high schoolers. Written by teens for teens, the teens "rate" various community service opportunities in the community. We have devised an objective assessment in which the teens provide their honest opinions about their volunteer experience. Modeled after the "Zagat Guide" which critiques restaurants, the Guide is a resource for teens who may not know of a volunteer opportunity or may not know at which non-for-profit is "fun" to volunteer.
