MISSION STATEMENT:
We are committed that Seattle students will develop their own understanding of food and energy through direct experience with the community.
DINNER:
In Seattle on January 12th 2008, local communities of educators, builders, chefs, legislators and students will gather to discuss the future of environmental education in Seattle highschools.

Our goal is to discuss what is already in place and what people are doing that works and apply that to the future of education.

This will be a chance to demonstrate to Seattle schools and students our commitment to build youth understanding of how our environment works and what their role can be.

Direct contributions of time, materials and curriculum will be made to Seattle’s highschools by local people, organizations and companies.

Project Description

1.Food Security Now! is a citizen centered approach aimed to cultivate a greater understanding of our food security needs in downtown Lewiston. The process will bring together partners representing diverse populations of the downtown in order to create concrete action steps to strengthen our local food system. Food Security Now! will address the need for low-income consumers to have improved access to affordable nutritious food year-round, and the need to connect low-income consumers to local farmers. In 2004, Empower Lewiston (EL) began asset mapping within the community to determine what the community has and what the community still needs. Maps looked at unemployment rates, education, income, and proximity to fresh vegetables and affordable food. EL discovered that residents downtown pay more for basic necessities at their local shops than they would if they went to a grocery store. Few stores had any produce. These data were important factors when the Downtown Education Collaborative (DEC), started talking with local organization, Lots to Gardens (LtG), about conducting a city-wide community food assessment. LtG expressed a need to better understand what food assets were available to people downtown and the state of the current food system. Without a secure source of fresh and wholesome food, people are more prone to diabetes, high blood pressure, low self-esteem, and depression.

Elements in Time is dedicated to creating sustainable social and environmental change with documentary media.

This includes:

1. Educating the world community about self-sustainability models which take into account ongoing global changes in climate and energy availability.

2. Promoting resilience and sustainable adaptation in areas of the world most at risk now and in the future.

3. Provoking sustainable local and worldwide solutions to social and environmental issues, focussing on the quality of life and future for humans and all other species.

We’re Building Community, Locally: House by House – Garden by Garden- Farm by Farm. The Byrd House Market is working to grow Richmond’s access to local foods while building community along the way. We encourage participation by local small farmers and producers, Youth, Backyard Growers and Community Gardeners. Volunteers needed to help with various tasks to help run the Byrd House Market each Tuesday through end of October. Volunteers can help once or as often as interested. Volunteers needed to help:

• post (1- 2 pm)directional signs
• retrieve (7-7:30 pm)directional signs
• help with Market take down (7-8pm) - break down tents, chairs, tables, etc. - 5 volunteers needed
• help prepare Market Basket (3:30-4:30)
• Cooking Demo Helper (3:30-6:30, 1 hour shifts)
• Share Table Helper (3:15-5:30pm; 5:15-7pm)- manning table selling donated plants and vegetables (or selling for a backyard grower, gardener or vendor who can’t attend Market)
• Circulating Info Sharer and Volunteer - sharing market information (music, cooking demos, market basket raffle, etc.) and relieving vendors for short breaks
