Project P.A.T.H. (Providing Attainable Transportation toward Healing

Challenges Identified:
When the Community Problem Solvers first heard about the mental health transportation crisis facing Ellis County, it tugged at our heartstrings and immediately grabbed our interest. We recognized the project was good, but it is an uncomfortable subject. After finding that all of our other project ideas were unattainable due to the resources available to us, we requested that Mackie Owens, at the Hope Clinic, return to explain more about the problem, and what was being asked of us.

Sembrando Esperanza

Many students and people in our community are unaware of the problems and lack of privileges a disabled person endures. Among the most marginalized of citizens in the United States and other leading industrial nations, a large proportion of disabled are impoverished and unemployed. We want to advocate for the attention to be redirected. No longer should the disabled be discriminated on the basis of medical impairment but attention should now be focused upon changing the social-political issues that underpin disability oppression.

REVOLUTION OF REAL WOMEN™

REVOLUTION OF REAL WOMEN™

This movement is for every one of you who has, in one way or another, been negatively affected by the societal quest for perfection and beauty. Ever felt you weren't thin enough, good enough, athletic, tall, short, curvy, sexy, smart, wealthy, or PERFECT enough?

Ever felt the need to conform to images of beauty that the media portrays as "Real"? We are for every individual who is ready to join a new Revolution for Women who demand to be respected and celebrated for who and what we are -- no matter what.

Comprehensive Resources for Children

I would like to create, promote, and implement a program that acts as a resource to local schools. There is a dramatic need for children to get attention on issues that cannot be provided within a school setting. For example, there are often educational issues (whether this is an undiagnosed learning disability, a behavioral problem that extends beyond the responsibility of the teacher, or family problems that are effecting academic performance) that are not addressed because there is not somebody who takes the initiative to see that the problems are rectified.

The Goodwill V.I.N.T.A Youth Ambassadors

In 1999 we started providing regular art, civic, educational and social activities that both adolescent and young adults with and without disabilities could do together. Giving both the disabled and non-disabled individual the opportunity to recognize and appreciate each other's ability. Enhancing their sense of empowerment, self-worth, self achievement so they can be productive and contributing members of the community.

Uyisenga N'Manzi

Uyisenga N'Manzi works with children and young adults who have become orphans and head of their households as a result of the Rwandan genocide and of HIV/AIDS. The majority of the beneficiaries of Uyisenga are also survivors of the Rwandan genocide and suffer from the consequences of witnessing and being victims of many atrocities. For these reasons, Uyisenga offers a comprehensive package to all of its beneficiaries. They receive mental health care but are also helped to achieve economic sustainability through the development of income generating activities.

Depression and Suicide Awareness Week

The second leading cause of death in college-aged people is Suicide.
This frightening statistic is what inspired the Nuçi's Space Student Organization to host a Depression and Suicide Awareness Week. It will be held in the Spring on the University of Georgia campus in Athens Georgia. The mission of this campaign is to get students talking about depression and suicide with the hope uniting everyone in fighting the stigma of mental illness.

Mental Health Approaches to Improve Diabetes Outcomes

Having Diabetes Mellitus (DM) doubles the odds that a patient will develop depression in their lifetime. It's a cruel cycle: depression makes diabetes difficult to manage and uncontrolled diabetes leads to deeper depression. This situation is difficult for anyone: now imagine the struggles faced by those below the poverty threshold. It's a problem that needs to be addressed and that's exactly what I want to do.
