See It: The Community being helped
The Thomas Aquinas College (TAC) Medical Society is a new organization for pre-medical, pre-dental, and pre-nursing students at Thomas Aquinas College.
The College's curriculum is a strong liberal arts program, and pre-health students, like us, choose it as their undergraduate education because professional schools, like medical schools and nursing programs, have seen liberal arts students excel as caregivers. But TAC's fixed, four-year program makes it difficult for us to compete for medical, or dental, or nursing schools.
Previously, each of us would have to work this out alone; now, the Society can make things easier. We support each other, share resources and suggestions, and prepare together for entrance exams, such as the MCAT. We also attended a lecture by a visiting professor from the Medical University of South Carolina as a group. (See attached pictures)
To become competitive candidates for professional schools, and to fulfill our dreams of becoming good physicians, we'd like to supplement our liberal education with more activities. For instance, a research project or a dissection. Our difficulty, though, is in funding. A few moments on the internet told us that dissections and research kits would be more expensive than we could collectively afford.
We are determined to become good doctors and nurses, and our work toward making ourselves competitive shows that.
We hope to do even better with the help of DoSomething.org.

Project Updates:
- Last week: our alumni mailing went out. Previously, the alumni have shown real interest in us (they all started joining our Facebook group, after all). Hopefully they can give us some tips!
- 2/11/08: The MCAT-study group is moving on to the Physics section after General Chemistry
- 2/12/08: Big news! The Development office is publishing an article in the alumni newsletter about us, including new pictures taken at our last meeting.
- 2/15/08: I was just informed that our alumni mailing got it's first reply! One of our graduate doctors is willing to help out.
- 2/19/08: A recent grad, who'd just finished his pre-reqs, visited campus and we had an impromtu question-and-answer session. It was good to hear from someone who'd done it before.
- 2/21/08: The website now has a forum to connect the students to the alumni, so that questions can be better answered. Check it out at www.freewebs.com/tacmedical
- 2/27/08: Our spring dissection budget has been approved by the Career Center. All systems go!
- 3/08: Another alumni physician came to address the group, and a very fruitful lecture resulted, plus a Q&A.
- 3/22/08: The spring dissection has been ordered; we're having difficulty scheduling it, though, because of all the events on campus. We'll get it!
- 3/25/08: One of our members, plus another TAC student, will be CPR certified on May 5. Other already have their certification.
- 3/20/08: The MCAT study group is on to Organic Chemistry.
- 4/2/08: Our letter of recommendation is still in our sponsor's hands--but our application should be complete soon.
- 4/10/08: Our application for the PLUM Grant is complete! Go dosomething.org!
- 4/12/08: We found a place for our dissection, and it's taking place on the 26th. Each member is researching a particular organ system and its common pathologies. See you there!
- 4/21/08: Our president is being considered for a position as the National Premedical Liaison to connect premedical societies across the nation. This is very exciting, and will put the TAC Medical Society on the map.
- She got it! Even though this doesn't help us much financially, it helps a lot with networking and resources. What an awesome opportunity!
- 4/26/08: our dissection went very well. Each of the members considered one organ system specially. We spoke about physiology and how it changes for the human. We also examined cat embryos, and the development of kittens.
- 5/23/08: our website underwent a major facelift! Check it out at http://tacmedical.webs.com/!
