C.H.A.M.P. Canine Help and Aid for Medical Purposes

Project Description

Recently having watched my beloved dog, Daisy, get hit by an oncoming truck after she managed to coerce herself out of her collar, I have been made aware of the pain and suffering that not only accompanies the owner of a dog that needs emergency medical help, but the veterinary bill, for said canine, as well. Being a relatively accident-free person, myself, I have really not encountered the ongoing and debated problem of health care costs in America; thus, it was news to me that it had engulfed veterinary medical assistance, as well. This knowledge really opened my eyes, and one question began to relentlessly circle my head, 'round and 'round..."What if someone couldn't pay?" What I want to do is simple, and can be done, with the help of fellow youth, friends, and members of the community. Not only can it be done, but it can be done in such a fashion that it has potential to branch out. I wish to begin C.H.A.M.P. It is one proposed solution, which I have developed, that may help the owners of dogs that are in need of emergency medical assistance - but may be unable to pay the rediculously-high veterinary costs. C.H.A.M.P. - Canine Help and Aid for Medical Purposes. I am in the process of materializing this acronym by means of a school club. Through simple fundraisers, sales, and donating members/sponors within the local community, the club will gather a fund. Through internet and physical resources, I hope to get the word out about the organization, thus prompting those dog-owners in such situations as that which the club may monetarily assist, to fill out applications for financial aid. The applications will most singularly determine the extent to which the assistance by C.H.A.M.P. is needed, by determing the family's/indivudal's financial need. Also, the application would declare the nature of the canine's medical emergency, which would also be a factor in the determination of how much money to give to the individual/family. Through such a consistent, yet efficient, circle of fund-rasing and funding, I sincerely believe the club/organization could firmly plant its roots in both the school and the community at large. Although somewhat elementary in process, I beleive that C.H.A.M.P. could not only benefit the community in a new and different approach, but, with time, expand to help those who's dogs are in need in the society, nation, and world.

The Congo

Project Description

I need your help. I am starting a projct called the Congo. Whether or not you think you are affected, you are however indirectly it may be. People everyday, every hour are being subjected to rape; women, men as well as children as young as 8 months old. This has got to stop!! We cannot keep going about our lives while poeple are dying. If we spent as much time covering this problem and ongoing epidemic as we did Britney Spears and her life, think how much better we would be and the people living in the Congo also. The issue here is not that people are getting raped but it is how. Men are not longer inserting their body parts but rather objects such as the head of a gun,sticks, twigs, steel: anything that can be inserted into a hole. This causes the tissue of the vaginal area to tear and a need for massive reonstructon surgery. People we cannot have this ongoing crisis continue any longer. The longer we wait the more peopl are dying. This project is designed to raise money for the few doctors that are aiding the thousands that are in need of reconstructive surgery. The doctors are not being paid sufficent enough sums and have to rely on the victims who have no source of income to pay for their fee. I am not forcing, just asking to give what you can because everything is needed for these people. We have to show them that we care and we feel their pain however unbearable it may be.

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic - International Humanitarian Aid

Project Description

Los Patriotas, El Club de Español, is a community service club. In short, the students of Sullivan East High School's Spanish Club, Bluff City, Tennessee, discuss and vote on projects they want to support during the school year. The members have decided that for the Fall of the 2007/2008 school year they would like to adopt a community in the Dominican Republic, in particular, the community of Puerto Plata. (The Spring community service project will be our 2nd Annual Food Drive.) In addition to the Spanish Club, numerous students and clubs expressed interest in joining the effort to raise needed items for Puerto Plata. Those clubs include Health Ocupations Students of America (HOSA), Student Council, Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), Key Club, and Future Farmers of America (FFA). Brittany C. a member of of my Spanish III class and an active member of the Spanish Club submitted a proposal for a $500 GameStop Youth Grant with the DoSomething Organization. The proposal was to include twenty cases of lollipops with all of the clothes we have collected so that she could share a little bit of herself with the children of Puerto Plata. On December 4th, a DoSomething representative, Ms. Jordyn Wells, gave Brittany a call informing her that she had been awarded to the grant. AWESOME job Brittany! Ridgewood International Human Advancement and Aid

Project Description

Helping Others Help Themselves: fighting poverty in Colombia My name is Fabio Palacio and I am a student at Ridgewood High School. Last summer I visited Colombia, the country where I grew up. While in Colombia I spent a lot of time in my home city, and in addition, spent a few days in a small village nearby, called Tubara. Tubara is the home of Raquel, a woman who helped raise my mother and me. My mother's family helped pay for her daughter's education, and we have remained long time friends with this family. When I visited Tubara, I was distraught by the conditions in which these people had to live. This neighborhood called "El Barrio los Pozos" was deteriorating and did not seem to be a stable or safe place to live. Barefoot children were running around in dirt "roads" infested with animal feces. Many lived in small, shabby houses and emaciated faces made their lack of food apparent. Raquel's daughter, Clara, is striving to help her community become a better place to live and she has gathered a group of women determined to improve the condition of their hometown. They took sewing classes and started a small clothing business. With the profits of this business, they hope to repair their homes and provide for their families. I was thoroughly moved by this experience and I soon started a course of action. This year at Ridgewood High School, I established a club called Human Advancement, devoted to helping these women. I have organized a series of fundraisers such as coffee sales, taco sales, public speaking and donations to help raise money for these women. I hope to eventually sell their products in the United States and help them expand and increase their profits. What I love about this project is that these women have to work for what they need; I am not just giving them everything they need. I hope that you will help the women of Tubara help themselves in an effort to save "El Barrio los Pozos."

B.E.N.A.B (Because Everyone needs a book)

Project Description

The need for an affordable means to obtain required textbooks is clear among university and college students. Expensive textbooks obscure aspirations for the financially struggling college student and add to the already stressful experience of transitioning to the collegiate level. BENAB will be a member-based organization that offers a solution to the problem of pricey textbooks. BENAB will provide a system through which students are given the opportunity to rent the required books needed for their classes. This method is based off the approach used in high schools where students were given textbooks at the beginning of the year and returned the books at the end of the year. By using this technique we hope to reduce the over all cost of school supply expenses, simplify the process of locating required books, eliminate stress generally put on students when trying to locate the required readings, and therefore making the transition to a higher level of education easier. Through membership fees, various grants, and donations BENAB will collect and/or purchase required books for the coming semester. Members can then rent any required book BENAB has available for classes and at the end of the semester return them to the organization. The organization plans to expand thereafter to sophomores, Jr’s and seniors in the following 5 years. Eventually BENAB hopes to expand its services to other colleges and universities nation wide becoming an on-going national aid program.
