North County Humane Society, a division of Action for Animals' Rights, serves all of San Luis Obispo County, California. The Humane Society operates the Margaret Raber Shelter for Cats and the Parfitt Adoption Center, a no-kill, for-life cat rescue shelter with cat adoption services.

We are advocates for abandoned, neglected and abused animals with preventative programs including:
• Spay and neuter support through spay / neuter discount certificates for dogs and cats
• Spay and Neuter Education
• Humane trap rental for our Trap, Neuter, Release program to control feral cat populations
• Friend For Life, for-life care for animals surviving their companions

CLAWS is a club i began at my school with my friend. It's ppurpose is to raise money for, and promote a local animal shelter, Pet Rescue. Pet Rescue is a no-kill shelter in need of supplies and help. We have been raising money all year and have collected newspaper and items to donate to the shelter.

Hi, I am a sophomore and I am working on my Girl Scout Gold Award Project. I am running a week long camp at my local YMCA to educate elementary students about animals and animal welfare. We will be doing a lot of community service activities in this. I will inspire the kids to take action, while allowing them to have fun with these animals. We will be running many fundraising activities which will be donated to our local animal shelter.  I am also funding and creating a dog park in my county. It is very difficult to get a piece of land from my government, but I am working hard to have them support me. The main purpose of this project is to SPREAD AWARENESS and RAISE DONATIONS. I will be hosting many events in this park, and hopefully this will gain media attention so that I can publicize the needs of our animal shelter. I will be running different fundraisers and programs through this dog park; hopefully many community members will use this. It is a lot of work to write letters, take pictures, visit people, get plans, and especially raise money. I will be building the entire park purely from donations and grants- the government will only give us the land.

I am trying to help raise money to help the New Braunfels Animal Shelter build a new facility because they are losing the land that they have been renting from the utility company in 2009. I am also trying to get people to donate food, treats, toys and other items that would make the animal's stay at the shelter more enjoyable and help them be more adoptable since they would be happier and more playful. I have already helped with the fundraiser, Bark in the Park held on Oct.27, 2007. I dressed in the Scooby Doo costume and stood by a busy street corner with my Mom and some other students trying to promote the event. I also helped to set up the food area, and check-in area prior to the event.

While there are so many people and projects in need, I would like to take a moment to tell you about my project to benefit the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley. I have been volunteering at the Animal Shelter of Schoharie Valley in Howes Cave, New York for the past nine years. In that time I have seen wonderful dogs find wonderful homes; however, I have also seen wonderful dogs wait years to find their forever home. In my time at the shelter I have fostered and found homes for over thirty dogs and two cats. In my adventures through fostering I have participated in our local 4-H dog obedience program with several shelter dogs as well as my own. This spring I also certified my own adopted shelter dog to be a therapy dog; which brings me to my project. This particular 4-H year I decided to open the option to those kids ages 9-18, who do not have a dog of their own, to participate in the dog obedience lessons with a dog from the animal shelter. I began with only one particular dog in mind but I received such support that I was able to send five dogs to the obedience lessons with their volunteer trainers, my self included. Because our shelter is funded primarily by donations, it soon became an issue of the money involved to participate in obedience. The class fee is $40 per dog and trainer, which we had originally wanted to split between the shelter and youth trainer. However because the number of dogs attending the class increased, that would still leave the shelter with a fee of $100. Money has also put a halt on furthering my plans with these particular dogs. I had hoped to have them all complete obedience training with their handlers and then to certify them as therapy dogs to help the community as well as help the dog find its loving home. From my experience at the shelter, a dog who we can say is obedience trained and a certified therapy dog will have a much higher chance of finding a new home than a dog who has not been through any classes. Once the dogs complete their basic obedience training, I can then start the training to become therapy dogs. The next problem is the fee for therapy dog testing and registration fee so that each dog can visit those in need. The test fee for each dog is $20 and then a $35 registration fee for each dog. If I can get enough money to start a “We Can Do It Too” fund I will be able to continue this program and further help these forgotten and abandoned dogs, many of whom have been looking for a home for over a year. Open Your Eyes (OYE) is a group in Newfield High School that I co-founded in the mid 2006-2007 school year. OYE is a group, not a school funded club that is geared toward tackling world issues. This year we took action against global warming by starting a recycling program in our school. This involved painting and labeling boxes, distributing them into all of the classrooms, and recycling the paper each week. Once our recycling project was under way we raised money and supplies for save-a-pet totaling in approximately $600. We are looking to do something ambitious that will have a big impact for our next project.
I am a member of the Genocide Intervention Network which is trying to stop the genocide in Darfur. The most basic responsibility that people have is to take action when they witness such horrific acts of violence. Unfortunately many people are unaware that a genocide is taking place. It is our goal to educate our school and community about genocide. A good way to do this would be to have a speaker come into the school for an assembly and then show a movie to the public after school hours. We would set up an information station encouraging people to take action. An event such as this would require monetary recourses that we do not have.
