global awareness

Zoo Corps

After composing an essay and doing an interview, I became a volunteer at the San Diego Zoo. This gave me an opportunity to talk to the public about pressing environmental issues such as habitat destruction and climate change. With the help of "biofacts" - such as furs, tusks and feathers - I began to spread the word of endangered species around the world. But I also presented onlookers with small, simple solutions that have the potential to make real differences.

Saturday Leadership Academy

The Saturday Leadership Program is aimed at empowering young high school students from Union City. The girls will explore their roles as young women of color living in urban Union City. While questioning and exploring the local and global world they live in the young women will learn to love, respect, and appreciate the teenagers they are and the women they are becoming.

Salone Soccer

We would like to collect soccer gear from the community, including cleates, uniforms, shin guards, socks, and soccer balls. We would also like to get donations to ship the gear to Sierra Leone. These donations will help youth soccer leagues in Sierra Leone. The soccer teams help promote fitness, self confidence, teamwork, and dedication in their participants. Soccer is a major passion for many of the youths in Sierra Leone. Unfortunetly Sierra Leone is one the poorest countries in the World.

SPEAK Break the Silence

SPEAK BREAK THE SILENCE was a Global Awareness Education Campaign that occurred over a 6-week period at my high school, St. Mary Academy Bay View in Riverside, RI in April of 2006. Each week was themed and comprised of facts and figures. Week one introduced the pandemic and challenged the Bay View community to SEE the reality of HIV/AIDS around the world. Week two introduced AIDS among women and challenged the young women of Bay View to educate themselves and BE women of empowerment.

Students for Darfur Campaign

I created a non-profit organization in my community and high school to raise awareness and money for the victims of starvation and genocide in Darfur, Sudan. We have raised over 3,700 dollars so far and are expecting to raise over $6,000 total. Students in the local high schools are now aware of the conflict in Sudan and have shown interest in aiding those affected. I have organized raffles, the sales of over 350 "Stop Genocide in Sudan" t-shirts, a benefit concert, and coin drives. A large community event is in the planning stage currently.
