Project Description

This project is designed to enhance the reading, writing, vocabulary, and math skills for children from grade level K-8 in the community of Fort Valley, GA.

This is a program that will be held every summer for two weeks.

The program will be supervised by 3 certified school teachers from the local elementary and middle school. All with at least 10 years experience. Also local college students will be volunteering.

The program will start at 9:00am and will end at 12:00pm

There will be a lesson plan provided for each grade level and for each subject being taught.

Lunch sack will be provided daily.

Transportation will be provided daily.

At the end of the program there will be a trip planned for all students who attend and the trip will be supervised by all members of the staff. The trip will be in relations to education as well as a mini vacation: History, science, Starcadia, etc.

Certificates will be administered following completion of the program.

The program will consist of a maximum of 80 students and a minimum of 12 volunteers.

Additional funds for this program will come from donations and several fundraisers.

Expenses include: Several school supplies, books, a small copier, arts and craft for visual learning, food, drinks, and the trip that will be decided later.

Project Description

I go to windham center school monday through friday for atleast an hour. I help out around the school.In a third grade classroom I work with a group of 22 kids.I take groups of seven of them at a time. We go over questions that they had on homework or something that they are doing in class. Somethimes we use whiteboards to practice cursive letters and sentences. Also, they use fake money to buy things at an auction that they put together on fridays. I help them to understand the value of money. I teach them how much coins are worth. They were reading books a few weeks ago that they had to make a play out of. I helped them get props and determine who was going to be which character. It is a very fulfilling experience and i enjoy doing it.

Project Description

During my sophomore year, my fascination in the content of my math courses and interest in real life applications (I've wanted to be an engineer since my freshman year) prompted me to found a math club. At first, I felt unsure if my peers would share my enthusiasm for mathematics. I was pleasantly surprised, however, to find that many students shared my interest. My high school math courses moved so quickly that we were unable to delve into useful applications of the skills we were learning. I began a math club so students could apply their skills to real-world applications such as those found in engineering. While exploring the practical uses of mathematics, we also delved into other subjects such as chemistry, physics, and logistics because an engineer must be able to incorporate all of these into practical solutions. Several students, from calculus to basic level math classes, attend Math Club because to explore mathematics and to enhance their understanding of basic engineering concepts. More than just education, Math Club has become something that members look forward to and enjoy. In addition to building and programming robots and figuring out how roller coaster loops work, we've made clever (though cheesy) T-Shirt designs. We took a trip to a nearby park to eat pizza and attempt to fly our newly built tetrahedral kite. (We learned many valuable lessons in aircraft design that to apply to future projects that we hope will be more succesful.) The highlight of Math club, Math night, educates the entire community. Last year I taught my neighbors in addition to several classmates how to understand the binary number system. By eliminating the "math phobia" that surronds math courses Math Club also hopes to get students more interested in math and science classes. Hopefully this interest will result in careers in math and science.

Project Description

Founded in July 2006, the United Aeronautics and Spaceflight Orgization (UASO) is a third generation virtual space agency aimed at simulating, with the highest realism possible, manned and unmanned spaceflight operations. To carry out these operations, we use a very realistic spaceflight simulator called Orbiter, created by Martin Schweiger.

What is the goal of the UASO? The UASO strives to provide the ultimate experience for those who wish to learn more about astronomy and space exploration, by simulating the every day operations of a space agency while online. All missions are conducted in real-time, and are broadcast live during various critical parts of each mission. Each mission is planned and coordinated as if it were the real thing and employs the use of real-world astrophysics and orbital mechanics theories and practices for added realism. The UASO also strives to get more and more people interested in math and science by teaching them the basics necessary for understanding manned and unmanned spaceflight from orbital mechanics to advanced astrophysics, we teach it all, and allow our members to control what field of interest they would like to work in while enjoying a “career” with the organization.

Project Description

An Introduction to Calculus is a course modeled after Duke TiP (Talent Identification Program) Summer Studies Program. This class selects highly talented 8th and 9th graders in my county, with only a background in Algebra I to Geometry, and presents a Polynomial Based-Calculus Course. The intention is that this course will provide a novel challenge to the classes participants without over burdening them. As about 40% of individuals enrolled in college calculus courses either make a D or fail, the material covered in this class, coupled with its delivery, which emphasises independent learning and communication of mathematics will support these students as they enter a full calculus course.

The course follows an independently constructed curriculm, ranging from a basic introduction of limits to the derivative, it's applications, the Mean-Value Theorem and Rolle's Theorem, optimization and related rates, and integrals. The course culminates with a guided independent project in an area of interest, and each student is expected to present a lesson to the class on this interest.

Students who complete the class sucessfully will exit with a plan for advancement in science and mathematics. Because of limited mathematics and science opportunities within the high school and a community college and university only miles away, this class hopes to utilize both of these resources to present opportunities which may best serve these students, as they have demonstrated their abilities through their participation.

Hang TYMERS (Teaching Youth Math Enrichment and Reading after School) is an after school program for at-risk children created by college volunteers from the University of Alabama. The program focuses on reading and mathematical mastery through one-on-one mentoring. In the beginning, sixth grade students are paired with a college mentor. This mentor serves as a role model, teacher, and friend. The idea behind the program is to challenge disadvantage children to answer the question, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Throughout the program, middle school students set short-term and long-term goals and create a plan to reach those goals. This year students will also use math, language arts, social studies, and science to answer real-world problems. Not only do the students gain academic mastery, they grow socially and emotionally with their mentor. The mentors work once a week for two hours in the school and gain knowledge and experience that can not be measured. The program has grown and helped children learn to love school and feel comfortable achieving success.

Irvington High School Do Something Club School is Cool Project: The main goal of this project is to target young people who are losing interest in their academics when they enter High School to give them the motivation and the insights on their futures. We have in mind to target freshmen. Studies have shown that within 3 weeks into the first year of high school has a big impact on the students. Either most students feel unmotivated due to the difference between their past academic lives or some feel motivated to keep going. Since high School is much tougher than other schooling, it creates a bigger impact in the students’ lives. In the other hand, there are students who are the top students of every class, but they reach a point where they feel burned out or not happy with their work then they lose the interest in what they once interest had. There are various types of students with different mindsets, but what they all have in common is that they forget about how important it is to graduate and pursue high studies. Most students are not able understand the value of their future lives since they are fine now; however, without knowing that, they lose the understanding of the importance of education and graduating and doing something productive with their lives. As a club, we would like to represent ourselves to create that change within their minds. It will be challenge however; we have planned few ways to execute this plan, which will create significance in them. The following explains some of the best plans and that we have as a club decided to do:
1. Create about 3 assemblies in the course of a school year. ( It will be a complete show )

2. During the Freshmen Orientation, make a Professional video to present.

3. As students, we can create that relation with the audience in which they will be able o relate themselves to.

4. Within the club, many motivated students have experienced the time in their life where they felt like quitting, but they drove themselves to success in life. Get them to speak at assemblies.

5. Work with the city council to present this to a city

6. Hold workshops to raise the interest in specific fields of careers (ex. Math, Science) many students are losing interest in those areas. We plan to achieve this as we build on our club. We will not be able to start off with everything. We will slowly build on what we can do.

7. Since this is a broad idea (Success) we plan to branch off with parts that specify into certain career interest. We have all these goals to achieve in getting the project to a successful status.

This project is not a project we as a club wish to finish and be done with within a one year span. We plan to keep this going for as long as possible. We have talked to our schools principle and teachers and they are excited for this project. They are all very supportive of this club and the project. This will not only improve the school’s students but it will create a difference in those lives who hated school once. That is the goal of our project. We want to create a big change in peoples’ lives, which they can remember in their life, through this.
