Crescent Community Playground

See It: The Community being helped

Recreation, playtime, downtime, relaxation, make-believe, and just plain fun describe the activities surrounding a playground. Until last year, children in the Crescent community had just a few playground toys to enjoy, some even unsafe by today’s standards. The Crescent Community Playground Association (CCPA) joined together for the purpose of replacing the old, unsafe play equipment at the Crescent School.
The rural Crescent community includes 3500 residents nestled in a wooded region between Lake Crescent and the Straits of Juan de Fuca. The local K-12 school has almost 200 students. Over 39% receive free or reduced lunches and come from homes with low-moderate income levels. Crescent also welcomes 11% Native American students within their classes. The community supports the school with its willingness to volunteer time and labor, yet the financial resources are limited. The CCPA raised nearly $45,000.00 in 9 months through rigorous fundraising. As the student representative, I was involved in all of the aspects of this. Yet, the best part, was building the playground last summer. When the kids came back to school in the fall of 2007, they had a beautiful new playground. Now, we'd like to finish this project with a small picnic area. So we're rolling up our sleeves once again. This could truly be a gem of a park in the middle of our rural home.

Flowers For Friends

See It: The Community being helped

My Girl Scout Troop learned from a local florist about the large amount of flowers thrown away after funerals, weddings and other events. Together, we brainstormed an idea to set up a system to retrieve these flowers and recycle them into renewed arrangements. The renewed arrangements have a gift tag indicating "In honor of the wedding of _________"; In memory of the life of ___________"; In celebration of _________'s graduation", etc. to commemorate the donor or event. We deliver the flowers to nursing homes, veterans, cancer infusion centers, the domestic abuse shelter and others in need in our community. Where appropriate, the flower deliveries will also include a face to face contact with the recipient to build relationships with folks who might be in need of a smile.
