See It: The Community being helped
My project, Share The Love consisted of collecting stuffed animals/plush bears, etc for children who are going through crises in their lives. By having a teddy bear or stuffed animal these children are able to have the needed support of a friend as they are going through difficult times. After collecting the animals I gave them to the Dupage Children’s Center and the Humanitarian Society’s Birthday Project. They will be passing out the animals to the children in need, as they help their families and the children. The Dupage Children’s Center gives every child they help, stuffed animals when they are with the center. The Birthday Project with the Humanitarian Center puts together party packages that include all the essentials for a child’s birthday, along with gifts. My stuffed animals are included in the packages as gifts for the children. With my project, I collected a total of 1480 some stuffed animals. Half of them went to the Dupage Children’s Center and the other half to the Birthday Project with the Humanitarian Society. To collect these animals and bears, I set up a system of drop off points at three local businesses. I had the Gorski Chiropractor Center, Kemerley Optical and It’s Our Earth Inc be the drop off points. By decorating boxes and leaving them at these businesses, people from all over Dupage County were able to bring in stuffed animals and leave them. I would then go to the stores and collect the animals that were brought in. By having fliers passed out at other local stores, and coffee shops people were able to learn about my Share The Love program. Along with passing out numerous fliers I also sent out a copy of the flier to five different newspapers that serve the Dupage area. The Warrenville local cable channel also aired my flier on their show which is shown on channel ten. For further collecting I had two local school collections. St. Irene School and Johnson Elementary school in Warrenville both passed out the 700 plus fliers I created (especially for the schools) to all of their students and had my boxes available for the collection. My project provided teddy bears, and stuffed animals to the local children who are going through crisis at the Humanitarian Center and at the Dupage Children’s Center. To evaluate the impact of my project, I looked at the amount of children that the Dupage Children’s Center and the Humanitarian Society worked with (about 1,400 for both combined), and this showed me that with the amount of animals I have collected, all of those children will be able to have at least one stuffed animal each, if not more! As a result of this project, I have learned that there are many generous people in our community and all are willing to help and donate to such a worthy cause. For myself, I realized that I am a good organizer and am able to stick to a tight schedule. With Share The Love, there was only one goal; that is to collect as many stuffed animals as possible, and I have done exactly that!
