Recycled Clothing For a Better World

Over the summer, I went through my closet and discovered that I had entirely too many clothes for my everyday needs. I decided that there had to be an organization that would put these clothes to good use. After much research, I found AFAB, an organization that states that they are "good for our planet" and "good for the less fortunate". The purpose of this endeavor was to take my unused clothes and donate them to those less fortunate in areas around the world.

The Needy Drive

Every year starting in December the Noatinal Honnor Society ask for about 125 families in the La Joya community who are in need. In November we go to bussiness and ask for a donation to the needy family Drive. With the money we buy all of the toiletries for all of the families and sometimes roof tops, windows, doors and heaters. We ask the students, culbs, JROTC, sport teams, and Central Office from La Joya High School to help participate in this project. We ask them to donate toys, food, clothing, or anything they wish to donate.

RESCUE QUILTS: Building Trust, Giving Hope...One Quilt at a Time

When I was 15, the evening news showed a small child wrapped in a policeman's jacket being carried away after a deadly tragedy. He had only a diaper and tee shirt on. The temperature was 22 degrees outside. At that moment, RESCUE QUILTS was born. I knew I could make a difference in the lives of some children in crisis. I worked directly with the Birmingham Police Department to set up a program that would make small blankets and quilts available for officers to distribute to children in trauma.

Just For You

I am in Girl Scouts and we have completed the Gold Award. For our Gold Award we were given a place to use for helping our community. We took in clothes that were no longer wanted and we washed, mended, sorted, and rotated them on display according to seasons. The idea of the project was to have anyone in the need of clothes come in and get as much of whatever they wanted to help them out.

Warm and Delicious

(November 2006)We combined a children's winter clothing drive with collecting leftover Halloween candy. The winter apparel was distributed at the Celebration Community Clinic, and the candy was donated to the North Shore Community Food Pantry.
