Now entering its third year, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Schenectady County has hosted the Schenectady Youth Marathon (SYM). To date, over one-hundred youth have completed the SYM with the support of numerous volunteers. Youth completing the SYM report increased fitness levels, as well as decreased time spent on the Internet, playing video games, and watching television. In addition to the fitness component, youth receive nutrition information based on the USDA “My Pyramid” program, and report a greater understanding of nutritional issues.

We are juggling, learning to ride unicycles, building human pyramids, jumping rope, balancing on balance boards, tumbling, and more! I am an elementary physical education teacher and this year my gym and my students have come alive through circus arts. Our Circus Club meets every Wednesday and Thursday after school. But, why circus?
There is an activity for everyone at all different skill levels. There is opportunity for individual expression as well as a sense of group belonging. There is competency that requires physical skills and fitness.

We are an informal organization with a mission to endeavor in multi-cultural events promoting Indonesian arts and language amongst our members, and the general Delaware public. We are a diverse non-racial and non-religious club, open to any individuals who would like to have fun and gain a richer understanding of our culture. So come and join us! We are currently looking for volunteers to help us on our upcoming show in August. We are in need of young energetic people who would like to learn new things, make new friends, perform or just help us set-up the stage. It's a fun summer project.

I will be competing in a triathalon in June of 2008. I am 8 years old and will be competing with adult competitors. I will run 5k, ride a bike 20k and swim 550 meters. I love to play videogames and do not like it when people associate videogames with laziness. I am going to compete with people that have spent their lives training for competitions like this, and show that kids like me can excell, in both gaming and fitness. I need corporate sponsorship to purchase my bike and competition clothing with the GameStop promotion embroidered on it.

Squish is a kid rock band from Vancouver, WA ages 12-15 years old. They are sending a message to their peers across the United States and playing concerts up and down the West Coast, about the dangers of an anti-sedentary lifestyle. Their song, "Personal Space Invader" is about how their friends are in their basements playing video games or watching t.v and how they want to be free from the t.v and are out playing in the sun, riding bikes, water skiing and doing all these fun activities.

My friend and I, for our senior project, have decided to help raise enough money to get our town sidewalks. The sidewalks would help with fitness in our town, since it is one of the most overweight counties in Ohio. We plan to work with our teacher as well as a lady that is heading this project. We have not yet started our project, but we plan to very soon!

Starting February 2009, I will be biking across the country to raise money for my high school's environmental action club. The experience will be a wonderful opportunity for me to raise money for my club and thus lessen the carbon footprint of my school, and therefore community.
Currently, the environmental action club (which has just been founded this school year) is devising a composting program for the school. We have met with "Compost Masters" from around town, and are talking with school administrators about this new possibility.
