the problem:

The number one killer in The United States does not discriminate between the poor and the rich, does not care about ethnicity, nor the location of the victim. The New York Road Runners Organization in New York City believes in preventing obesity through the promotion of exercise. Getting people exited about exercising and improving themselves physically (we believe) is the cure for the national epidemic. Being able to measure physical improvement by watching mile splits gradually decrease creates an impetus to get healthier. Every weekend anywhere from 5,000 to 37,000 runners take to the streets in Central Park to join some of the most exiting foot races in The United States. These races require hundreds of volunteers to execute. New York Road Runners is a non-profit organization so volunteers are necessary for the survival of the club. All profit made from the races goes directly to the New York Road Runners Foundation which offers free programs to children whose after school programs have been cancelled. Volunteer jobs include handing out water to the race participants, clipping timing chips off of shoe laces at the finish area, handing out medals to race finishers, course marshals, and guarding race timers on the course.

On Sunday August 5th, 2007 New York Road Runners will stage the 2nd annual NYC Half Marathon, presented by Nike. This race had a cap of 10,000 entrants and sold out in one day last year. This dramatic course will begin by running a loop of Central Park, then go down 7th Avenue into the heart of Times Square. The race then turns right on 42nd Street, goes over to the West Side Highway, and then finishes in grand style near Battery Park! It is hoped that someday, this race will be as large and as famous as the ING New York City Marathon itself. Volunteer at the groundbreaking 2nd running of this event, and be a part of its history. The race starts at 7 AM and has a three hour time limit. Volunteers will report to two main check-in areas: Central Park & Start and Battery Park & finish.
