Calendars for a Cause: Helping in Haiti!

See It: The Community being helped

     We are making calendars to raise money to build a house in Haiti. The family that would live in the house is very poor and have had many misfortunes in their lives. The eldest son was born handicapped and his mother is often very ill. The mother's other son is in highschool. Not only is he an amazing English student, but he is the best student in the entire high school. The family is severely impoverished and our help would be a drastic improvement for their lives. Since the fall we have been working on this fundraising effort. We will need to raise $2000 to build a single house. So far we have held a party for the cause and a dance marathon. From just these first two events, we have raised about $1,000. We feel that making and selling calendars to our school community is just the right "kick" to get us the money we need!       We have a special class in school dedicated to constructing the calendar. We have decided that the calendar will be the 2008-2009 school year featuring unusual international and national holidays. For example, in August we have "Sea Serpent Day".

Invisible Children

See It: The Community being helped

Over the last 20 years, the people of Uganda have been facing, poverty, displacement, aids and child abductions. A group known as the Rebel Army is primarily responsible for the children being torn from their families and forced to fight and abduct other children, along with the increased amount of displaced families. Upon hearing about this and what it was doing to the people of Uganda, a group known as Invisible Children stepped in and decided to make a difference.
Offering teens across the country a chance to make a difference in their world, IC is rapidly growing and generating waves of change in Uganda and in the hearts of American students through their schools for schools program.
Greenway High School's IC club is part of the change. We're constantly trying to develop new and improved methods of helping the children of Uganda regain their lives.
