See It: The Community being helped
Preshrunk, as we are calling our campus thrift store, is meant to be the starting point for much much more. We hope for it to become a hub for sustainability activism on campus as well as an educational experience for as many students as possible. We hope to spread the word environmental stewardship and the message of hard work to as many students on campus and members of the surrounding community as possible.
From the moment of its inception, it has been almost an entirely student controlled project. Working with professional staff in the Office of Residential Life at my university to create the official contracts, we have forged a business agreement with a local thrift store which receives little business from college students to open our own store on campus with their aid. With the Dean of Students having given the full okay on this project, from this point on the business will be entirely student run with one Residence Director serving as an adviser.
Our next step is to find a few more volunteers once our fall semester begins to help clean up and partially renovate the facilities where we plan to house the store with the aid of our campus's Physical Plant. We hope to have the store ready to go, complete with a vintage motif, by the middle of November. After that, we must determine an advisory board that will effectively make all of the major decisions such as where the profits from the store will go.
It it our desire that any profits from our thrift store go towards funding more sustainability efforts on our campus such as the installation of energy saving light bulbs, or shower heads with a more sustainable water flow.
