A Midwinter Night's Dream is an annual gala fundraiser to benefit ALS, started and run entirely by high school students from Northport, NY. The students, myself included, became active in fighting ALS, or Lou Gehrig's disease after a second teacher in the district was diagnosed with this terrible disease. ALS is a neurodegenerative disease that affects voluntary muscle movements. As neurons die and muscles atrophy, patients are eventually left paralyzed and usually die within 2-5 years of diagnosis from respiratory failure.

My idea is to offer high school credit for tutoring Elementary School Students. I believe that if credit is offered to high school students, a lot more of them will help tutor the elementary students. I know that a lot of elementary students go after school to tutoring but a lot of them don't like to be tutored by regular teachers. They seem to find them stuffy, and don't seem to think that they "get" their problems. 14+9 was a very hard problem when you were little, and they think that someone closer to their age knows how boring it can be sometimes.

In a world of advancements in technology, globalization, partnerships and interactions amongst nations, severe environmental problems and humanitarian crises, there must be leaders who will build the future. We, the members of the Leadership Training Institute, are committed to building leadership, teamwork, and self-reflection skills in motivated high school sophomores. We plan to start with students in the Cambridge and Boston area.

I took volunteers from my high school, Kapolei High School, and organized a concert for the elderly and held events to encourage student and elderly interaction. At the end, I held a christmas concert for the elderly at the nursing home.

Once a month a group of Granger High students visit the Harmon Home(a senior center)to interact with the elderly. While there, we mostly play Bingo, hand out prizes, sometimes play other group games, and also have dances. Once a year the members of the Harmon Home come to Granger High and give the students a chorus concert. This concert is a lot of fun for both the senior citizens and the students. Last year the students were able to take the Harmon Home members with them on a field trip to the zoo. Every time the students visit the Harmon Home they learn something new from the members.
