We plan to create another housing cooperative focused on sustainability and social justice in Kalamazoo. We provide affordable, cooperative, and community-focused housing. Our organization will be committed to cooperation and democratic member control, advancing the cause of higher education, acting as a model for ecologically sustainable living, and community service and education that works toward social justice.
We came to this idea after seeing campus cooperatives around the country and learning that no alternative housing of this nature exists in Kalamazoo.

Introduction After witnessing the impacts of petroleum dependence while working in Central America, I co-founded Whitman Direct Action (WDA), a student activist organization at Whitman College. Our mission is to aid marginalized communities by promoting opportunity via sustainable development. Our first project stemmed from a vision of the existence of a Central American biodiesel network that supports sustainable community-based growth and improvement.

I started the Bed-Stuy CSA, because families in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn are unable to purchase fresh vegetables in the neighborhood. This lack of access to fresh, healthy food contributes to the neighborhood’s significant health epidemics: according to the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s Health of Central Brooklyn report, residents of Bedford-Stuyvesant suffer a rate of heart disease 30% higher than the NYC average and are two times more likely to have diabetes than the average New Yorker. In fact, 1 in 3 Bed-Stuy residents is obese.
