OASIS (Outdoor Action for Social and Intrapersonal Strength)

OASIS (Outdoor Action for Social and Intrapersonal Stregth) is a project I am running at the Durham Nativity School in Durham, North Carolina. The Durham Nativity School is a nonprofit organization that provides free private school tuition to at-risk middle school students in the Durham area. OASIS is a supplemental retreat program for the students at this school. We take their students (approximately 15-35 students are expected to attend each retreat) on weekend long retreats to various areas that are relatively near (but outside of) the Durham area.

Home Sweet Homeless

About 10 months ago 2 of my friends (18 and 20 years old) and I started monthly potlucks that we host on the second Saturday of the month. We wanted to help the homeless community in our city. We are all either high school or college students and don’t have a lot of money, so we invited our friends to come with us and bring food. The result was a potluck picnic that did not resemble the feeding lines that the homeless were accustomed to. Our events average 100-150 homeless people and 100-150 students and families that come to the park and share the afternoon together.

Operation Smile

The Reality Check has been working extremly hard with getting the community together and feel that although we have been trying our best, there is still so much more that needs to be done.
This summer, our main goal is going to be making the lives of homeless people in our community a little more happy & healthy and a lot less stressed.
One of the main things that we want to go, is give back to the kids. Yeah, we feed them, and donate our old stuff. But do they ever really get anything new? They never chose to be out on the streets, that's just how they have been brought up.

Backpack Project

A new dynamic program has been launched in King County called the Backpack Project. The objective of this program is to encourage local homeless and transitional youth to become more self sufficient. In Seattle, there is an estimated 800 young people ages 12-24 who don't have a safe place to sleep on any given night. The number for the rest of King County could be double or even triple that estimate. With the population rising rapidly each year, the numbers of homeless individuals including homeless youth will also increase unless something is done.

"Just Like You"

I am beginning a project. The project name is not set as of now, and probably won't be until it is finally complete. I have lived and visited many areas with an outrageous homeless population that is hated, ignored, and looked down on. I would like to start this project by getting a nice recorder (continuous recording, battery life, and direct computer upload) and recording life stories from homeless men, women, and children around the United States. I would like to be able to offer them some money but I really do not have the resources myself.

J-Serve: Help San Diego's Homeless Youth

On April 13, 2008 three hundred teens will gather to make a huge impact on the lives of homeless teens living in San Diego. We will be renovating shelters, serving hot lunches, making personal health care and toiletry bags and food packages. We will be doing a compete cleaning of a teen shelter, helping with a drive for homeless mothers with infants and educating others and advocating for the homeless youth.

Birdhouses For The Homeless

There is a common misconception about homelessness and how it can be overcome. The homeless need homes...not jobs, or cloths, or food, or education .... those are problems in and of themselves... these people need homes (and who is to judge what type of home it is. ie. birdhouse). Once they have a home, they are ready to tackle other obstacles in their lives. As you will find out, it is quite simple to become part of the solution. All it takes is a little time and effort!!

Hampton Roads Homeless Stories

The project I began this past summer takes place within the Oasis Social Ministry in Norfolk, VA. I raised some funds through my own donation to the project in order to purchase one hundred spiral notebooks, pens, and several return bins. These notebooks were then taken to Oasis Social Ministry and I began to speak with the homeless and needy clients and explain my project, with is as follows: I will give them a notebook and pen so that they can write down their story and/or experiences.
