Student Movement for Real Change (SMRC) empowers young people to improve health and education in neglected regions of the world. By engaging students in chapters on college campuses, hosting conferences, leading service trips, coordinating an international pen-pal project that includes domestic tutoring, and managing international development project, SMRC provides students a vehicle to make real change in developing communities worldwide. Project Updates:
Kenya Water Project: SMRC is implementing a water and sanitation project in Kayafungo, Kenya. SMRC will extend freshwater pipelines 13 km across one of the most arid regions in Kenya to bring water to over 30,000 people, multiple schools and the region’s primary health clinic. In addition, SMRC will conduct health and hygiene workshops and increase latrine coverage by 25% to improve sanitation and decrease the spread of disease.
Schools and Sports Fields in South Africa: SMRC plans to develop sports fields at two schools in the Manyeleti Community of Mpumalanga. This project will directly impact the entire community. Sites identified for field construction include Mdluli High School and Manyangana High School, which will reach 3,000 students and community members. SMRC has already constructed 4 classrooms at Mahlathi Primary School and built two libraries.
Joining Hands Pen Pal Project: Joining Hands Pen-Pal Project (JHPP) seeks to link South African students with American students through means of a letter-writing pen-pal program. The program incorporates an tutoring component in which college students tutor and mentor elementary students domestically as they engage in an international cultural exchange.
Service Trips to Rural South Africa: SMRC leads over 20 university students each summer to live and work in the Mpumalanga province of South Africa. Students spend the first week and a half in Cape town and Johannesburg in training sessions, two weeks hosting an Education, Health and Recreation Camp that provides courses on arts & crafts, drama and theater, and sports for children of the village and two weeks teaching primary school students (3rd to 7th grade) basic reading, writing, and speaking English curriculum, math and science classes, and assisting teachers in the life skills course.
