Project Description

In the area, there really is nothing to do. constantly you'll see teenagers, and even children as young as 10 walking the streets and just basicly getting into trouble. Drugs, alcohol, and violence are constantly seen on every street corner. The adults and authority in the area complain about the problem, yet give no solution. If you have no car, your limited to going to see an overpriced movie, or going to the walmart or target. If you do have a car, your expected to drive anywhere from a half hour to an hour an a half to find something fun to do. So I decided that its time to give people in this area something to do, somewhere safe and fun to go. I'm currently looking for a building to set up a kind of teenage club. I'm friends with many local bands, who are trying to make their break, and I'm sure i could convince them to play at the club for no cost, if only to get their name out there. The Giant in our area has a program where it donates $15 worth of food once a week to a worthwhile charity, and i'm sure that many of the other local business' would contribute also when they realize how many teens we could be getting off the streets. I've already spoken to people who are in the police academy who would be glad to do bodyguard work, such as controlling the crowd and monitering those who enter, and i really think that this idea will take off if its given the opportunity. I've already talked to many people at the high school and they agree. So hopefully if i receive funding i can make this happen.

Project Description

The goal of project H2O is to (a) increase awareness within the Eastern High School student body and faculty and the general public regarding the lack of adequate clean water supplies within both local and global communities, (b) use this increased awareness to inspire students, faculty and the community to support our fundraising efforts, with the goal of providing walter filtration assistance to a needy family or community, and (c) inspire others to volunteer in water sanitation projects by documenting our own volunteer initiatives. Our Senior Gifted and Talented class intends to document our own experiences when volunteering in clean water activities locally, demonstrating how others can similarly advance this cause.

Project Description

Goals:
-Find an unused plot in a low-income urban environment and transform it by planting a healthy diverse garden, where the food grown can be sold for almost nearly free to community members.
-Provide youth the opportunity to grow and harvest their own plot and/or have a designated area for creating a mural on the surrounding walls that will promote social justice, peace, and/or cultural understanding.
-Providing an encouraging, positive, and creating environment for youth and staff.
-Providing teachers and staff with materials/resources necessary to successfully educate their students on their specific skill.
-Deter youth from falling into the prison cycle, which deteriorates personal development and pushes young people into a life of crime and an overall negative lifestyle.
-Hold monthly fund raising events to ensure the survival and success of the program.
-Have a minimum of 20 dedicated core students participate in the program.
-Create monthly themes for the students to work with to intertwine a political analysis with the artistic aspect of the project as a means to provide political education on current social issues and conditions in our communities.
-Provide skills necessary to ensure completion of student projects.

Strategy:
-Outreach in classrooms and in the community.
-Provide presentations to students in classrooms to provide a detailed description of the project to persuade them in participating in the program.
-Create an evaluation process to meet the needs of students and staff, and make certain that the program is exceeding their expectations.
-Create short term, mid-term and long term goals. Have biweekly evaluations to ensure the steps needed to reach these goals are being taken, and to provide assistance for those in need of it.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Program Coordinator:
Oversee program; work on fund raising; keep program running productively
-Facilitate program staff and facilitators meetings
-Develop strategy for program evaluation
-Coordinate with staff to develop procedures and policies, follow and make sure procedures and policies are followed
-Develop outreach methods, responsible for ensuring that minimum expectation of student participation is meant.
-Strengthen relationships with possible allies
-Develop roles for staff and facilitators
-Seek fund raising opportunities, as well develop alternative funding strategies
-Create database of teachers and schools where there is an opportunity to outreach to students through classroom presentations
-Open communication with coordinators and workshop facilitators
-Coordinate with facilitators, teachers, and students on developing possible incentives for student involvement in the project

Youth Development Coordinator:
Track progress of students involved; Assist in their personal development; Act as an advisor who the youth can turn to for assistance
-Ensure student satisfaction and enjoyment in the project
-Work with youth to develop strategies to ensure excitement and participation
-Coordinate with Program Coordinator the evaluation process
-Assist youth in the development and completion of their personal projects.
-Develop with the youth a personal time line for each student to track their progress and get them closer to completing the project.
-Develop community building activities to strengthen relationships amongst the youth, get feedback from facilitators on this process
-Work with Program Coordinator that student participation meets expectations

Workshop Facilitators:
Open communication with Program Coordinator; open communication with youth involved; develop skills workshops;
-Develop workshops on their specific skill
-Present workshops and work plan to program team
-Develop and strengthen relationships with students involved
-Work with Youth Development Coordinator to track student success
-Participate in program team meetings
-Participate in developing ideas and process for monthly fund raising events
-Outreach to other possible instructors
-Connect with other workshop facilitators for program coordination

Project Description

The Greenville RiverRock Festival is a free, day-long, live festival to support local music in the Greenville/Eastern North Carolina region. This festival hosts a rare opportunity for all walks of life to set aside differences in age, gender and income and enjoy grassroots arts at its best. The Greenville RiverRock Festival features eight local/regional musical acts, a hot wing eating challenge, karaoke contest, fashion show, Guitar Hero Tournament and booths for local businesses to sell goods and promote themselves.

The Greenville/Eastern North Carolina region prides itself on diversity and talent in many areas. One of these talents is found in the wealth of musically inclined and emotionally invested artists in the area. Music is the universal language for communicating thoughts, ideas and feelings, succeeding where words and conversation fail. With the enormous amount of interest, talent and spirit found in the region, The Greenville RiverRock Festival aims to bring these talents together and allow ideas, thoughts and music to be formed within the City of Greenville. The RiverRock Festival also uses its entertainment and attractions to help spread messages of responsibility and awareness for some of the social hazards that await the youth of the area. These messages are conveyed through the festivals partners and sponsors, such as the Pitt County Substance Abuse Coalition, the City of Greenville Youth Council and the Planned Parenthood Health Systems.

Because of this mission and common interests in the Local Art and Music Community, as well as Greenville/Eastern North Carolina, the Magnolia Arts Center, Greenville's only comprehensive Arts Organization, has teamed up with The Greenville RiverRock Festival to make this event a successful and memorable experience. All proceeds, including donations, merchandise sales, after-party admission etc., will benefit Magnolia Arts Center and their passion for exposing the community to creativity, art and expression.
