Project Description

The mission of Funding the Community is to consult student groups on fundraising and volunteerism to increase philanthropy on campus. Funding the Community will work closely with organizations to clearly outline a charitable goal towards increasing community involvement and improving fundraising.

Goals
1. To help organizations brainstorm and identify a community or charity they wish to support.
2. To help organizations create a plan. (ex. Organize an event, coordinate volunteer hours, etc.)
3. Create a set of successful fundraising ideas to be published on the internet for the access of other students.
4. For members of Funding the Community to build communication, leadership, and organizational skills which they can use throughout their lives.
5. Promote volunteerism across campus.
6. To survey the amount of volunteer hours and donations taken each semester to later track our impact on the campus in the upcoming semesters.
7. Bring together different student groups with similar goals to collaborate and support each other’s projects.

Project Description

Kean FOCUS represents students at Kean University (NJ) who are For the Obtainment of Climate and University Solutions. We are going into our second semester. We are a small group but have big dreams. Our goal is to educate the students and faculty about global warming and how to make a change. I started this club after seeing An Inconvenient Truth and participating in a video conference with other colleges aiming to create an action agenda. The club originated from a plan to bring Focus the Nation to our campus on January 31, 2008. I am currently working with a great faculty advisor and our greatest struggle has been to get people interested in coming to our meetings. We need to make some noise for our voices to be heard. Hopefully this upcoming fall semester, we can have demonstrations and events that get people's attention. We are the youth of this nation, and we need to take advantage of our power and responsibility that this age comes with. That where FOCUS can help.
