Healthy Food For Our Youth

My name is Skye Rios and I am a multi-cultural low income youth. I, along with many friends, lobbied city council for months to get a much needed central space for teens to spend time, study, and offer each other support in reaching our life goals. The city provided us with the small space, bathroom and free utilities that we call Nuestro Lugar (Our Place).

Living in southern West Virginia where cultural norms often take precedence over healthy decision making, it has always been evident that a greater community-wide effort needed to be born to counteract the destructive decisions of various members of the community where I live, namely youth.

I want to be able to start a teen center in my local hometown. I hate seeing the majority of my peers from high school going out every weekend just to drink or do drugs. They need something better to do with their time. For 3 years now, I've been trying to get this idea up and running. I have been featured in the local paper and have proposed ideas to the city's chamber of commerce and city's board members. There just wasn't any help coming from anyone except good luck. I don't personally have enough funding to rent or own a building right now.
