KIDS in distress is a community center that is a safe haven for kids who have been victims of domestic abuse, or who have had past behaviorial problems in preschools, and as a result have been expelled and can no longer find a suitable environment for pre-school learning. This center provides a learning center for these kids who are deprived of the love they need, and kids who otherwise would not have an oppurtunity to socialize with other kids and gain the advantage that preschool gives. When I volunteer at these centers, I assist the teachers in the classroom in getting the kids organized for classroom activities such as snacks, and other activities like recess.

September 11, 2001 Memorial Wall

See It: The Community being helped

On September 11, 2001 the United States and the World witnessed a tragedy. Terrorism caused nearly 3,000 people to lose their lives. Each person died a hero.

In an effort to never forget the victims of 9-11, I constructed a memorial wall in my high school two years ago. After receiving approval from my principal, I asked a school club, Kansas Association for Youth, to assist me in creating the wall. The project took four months to plan, buy materials, create, and make. The wall contains 2,996 stars. Each star represents one victim from the hijacked planes, Pentagon, and World Trade Centers. A name of every victim was handwritten on each star to personalize the memorial. The wall is located inside the high school though the front entrance and is open to the public for visitation.

11 Facts about the Darfur Conflict

Fact 1

More than 2 million innocent people have been forced from their homes due to the Darfur Conflict.

 

Fact 2

At least 400,000 people have been killed.

 

Fact 3

Over 3.5 million people rely entirely on international aid in order to survive.

 

Fact 4

The Sudanese government, along with a militia group called “Janjaweed” are responsible for this widespread killing, raping, assault, and village destruction.

 

Fact 5

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, has called the Darfur Conflict “the largest and most complex humanitarian problem on the globe.”

 

Fact 6

The UN’s top humanitarian official has said that the conflict is “going from real bad to catastrophic”.

The conflict has been going on since July of 2003.

Although most non-government organizations say that 200,000 to 400,000 people have been killed in Darfur, the Sudanese government claims that only about 9,000 have died.
