Comfort For Canines is a individually founded program in which I collect blankets, towels, comforters, and dogs beds in new or good condition. Also, paper towels and hand sanitizer are collected and donated to the Broward Humane Society, including its many branch offices. I travel there three times a month, depending on the size of the present donation load. So far, we have collected over thousands of dollars in paper and bedding for Broward County alone.

Are you interested in helping children in the foster care system? If so, Hudson County CASA is currently recruiting volunteers to advocate for the best interests of abused and neglected children. CASA works through trained community volunteers to insure that needed services and assistance are made available to children while helping to move them toward safe and permanent homes. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and its volunteers speak for children in court, serve as fact finders for the judges and safeguard the interests of the children while they are in the foster care system. There will be an information session about the program and the role of its volunteers on Tuesday, June 17, 2008 at 6 p.m. in Room 901 of the Hudson County Administration Building at 595 Newark Avenue, Jersey City. Please utilize the rear entrance as the front doors are locked after 5 p.m. Hudson County has over 700 children in foster care; most have been removed from their homes for abuse or neglect. Mission: As a group, we are striving to advocate to our community for environmental concerns. By designing a kick-off of environmental action, we strongly believe that people simply need the knowledge! As the catalyst, we hope to benefit our lives and those of future generations.

Description: On April 26, 2008, we will be hosting a day of tree and flower planting at a local open space. Involving our school, inspiring our leadership, and envisioning our dream are ways we are taking the current problems into our own hands.
After the planting, we will host a BBQ in which we will relay information and ideas on how to keep up their conservation efforts. We hope the effects will stretch far across the community and inspire people to take action in their own backyards.
Personally, we also hope to learn from our project. We would love to transform our own daily routine to be more in tuned to the preservation and care of the world.

Project Description

The Pacifica Project Peace club is trying to go on a community service trip in conjunction with the company "amor", in order to build a house for a poor family in northern mexico. As a club, we will drive down to San Diego, receive immigration advice, and drive to Mexico where we will camp for five days. Within that time, the group will work soley to build a house for a very deserving, yet impoverished, family. At the end of the trip, we will present the house to the family, changing their lives forever. The cost of the trip is $200 per person, plus $300 for tools and some additional money for gas, food, and water. Please, please help us with this great cause so that we can help someone else. We have 12 people going on the trip, and we need to raise funds. We are really looking forward to changing lives, because nothing is more rewarding.

I would like to start a sand volleyball tournament and cook out at the Band Shelter on 23rd Street in Bettendorf, Iowa this summer. There are two courts there, so we could have two pools of teams playing at once. The champion form each bracket would play in the end. ALL MONEY EARNED WOULD GO INTO BUYING TREES, which would be planted around the city. I am going to try to see if Wallaces Garden Center (or some other local garden center) will sell us trees for a discounted price. If possible, I also would like to hold a barbeque for any hungry people nearby. I would try to get food either donated or buy it from a local grocery store. I'd also like to create t-shirts that say "Play for the Planet" which would have a giant tree with a volleyball. I could sell the t-shirts either separate or include them in the entree fee. The back would have all of the sponsors (Wallaces, Hy-vee and the "Do Something" organization) In the end, after we obtain the trees from Wallaces Garden Center we would need volunteers to plant the trees. My high school (Pleasant Valley High School) has a volunteer hours requirement and I could have an announcement the last week of school for people who are interested in earning some of their hours, or would just like to help out. I would also create an event on www.facebook.com. My mom is also the regional director for USAV club volleyball, so I could obtain emails of competitive volleyball players in Pleasant Valley Club Volleyball. My project could impact and greatly beautify the Quad Cities. (Currently, I there is not an exact date set because I need to find funding to follow through.)

R.O.O.T. (Running Out of Time) Darfur Activism Committee was co-founded by my friend Ana and I after we attended the Save Darfur Rally in New York City. Darfur, a vast region in Western Sudan, Africa has been the location of increasing violence. Not in a Civil War, but in genocide, the governmentally supported Janjaweed militia has been systematically killing the non-Arab African population since 2003 in what has been called "The Holocaust of the 21st Century". To initiate awareness for our group and this under-publicized atrocity, Ana and I worked with our school's TV Production teacher to create a short film documentary about the crisis and the opportunity to help through ROOT. At our first weekly meeting 25 students attended and began to generate ideas to raise awareness and aid for the victims. ROOT's many activities have included bake-sales, a candlelight vigil, and information tents held at regional fairs. Donations from events like these have been used to send over 300 solar ovens to refugee camps in Darfur which not only fight the disease by sterilizing water but also protect women and children from rape and abduction which most commonly occurs when they leave the camps to forage for wood (to burn as fuel) and water. ROOT also participated in the efforts of larger groups. We helped to create the "Day for Darfur" at the Bridgeport Blue Jays minor league baseball team's game in which half the proceeds were sent to Darfur support groups, joined the Connecticut Coalition to Save Darfur and local STAND (a student anti-genocide coalition) group to heighten regional awareness, and worked with Amnesty International of Connecticut to lobby for a more Darfur-supporting political agenda. Finally, networking was a huge aspect of ROOT's efforts. We presented information and ways to help the victims of the genocide to Republican and Democratic parties, philanthropist groups such and the Exchange and Rotary Club, and local churches, temples, and youth groups. The efforts just explained were some of the accomplishments of last year. This year we are continuing with the similar projects and will vote on two other students to replace mine and Ana's position as the leaders of the group so the effort to help will continue.

The OCHS Interact Club is helping to beautify the Howard Stainton Senior Center in Ocean City, New Jersey. The Ocean City High School Interact Club and the Ocean City/Upper Township Rotary Club is open to all OCHS students between 14 and 18 years of age. The club has several goals. The first is a project of international scope. The second area of service is to our community. The last Service are involves the school. We are continually looking for projects that make OCHS a better school. The projects we do all have fun as a requirement.

Summer in the City is a non-profit organization designed to improve and expand community service in metropolitan Detroit. Summer in the City offers community service projects that are fun, flexible and fulfilling for high school students, and practical and productive for partner organizations in Detroit. Since 2002, 1200 Summer in the City volunteers have contributed over 22,000 hours of service to projects that help make Detroit a safe, beautiful and sustainable place for everyone.

Summer in the City projects include demolition, construction, painting, planting, working with elementary school students and assisting the elderly. Every project is created in partnership with a local organization to engage the volunteers, enrich the neighborhood, and build bridges between the city and suburbs. From murals to community gardens to new houses, the impact of Summer in the City projects can be found all over Detroit, and volunteers take open minds and optimism back to all corners of Southeast Michigan.

This summer, for the first time, we're hoping to add another carpool site in Troy, MI, a large pool of students that has yet to be targeted. The site will focus on youth enrichment programs in Detroit public schools, giving new volunteers the opportunity to directly make an impact.
