See It: The Community being helped
My Dad and I have started a BMX racing team in our community. Dad is helping me to contact Foster Care, Integral Youth Services, The Angel Project, Child Development, the local military base and other orgaizations to reach children who are going though problems in their lives. They may be from families with gang orientation, drug addiction, alcohol addiction, abuse, divorce, deployment or parent death. These children may have emotional or physical problems. We are creating a team "family" to promote dedication, respect, sportsmanship and teamwork to form values these kids can use all their lives. We want to help troubled kids stay off drugs, alcohol, stay out of gangs, stay in school, away from crime and off the streets. They must sign a contract with their parent(s)/guardian saying they will abide by our Code of Conduct for a full year. They are given a uniform, bike, helmet, a year's membership in the American Bicycle Association and a year's racing fees at the local track (and any other track we may travel to when racing). At the end of the year, if they have not broken their contract, they are given all the equipment and are asked to remain a member of the team for another year. When they outgrow equipment, they are asked to "trade" it with us, and we will give them the next size bike, helmet or uniform under the same terms. We race twice a week, practice once a week, will be holding fund raisers and community service projects. Sponsors will be promoted on our equipment, team vehicles, bikes, signs at all our events and on our website(s). We currently have a web page up and running that shows our Code of Conduct and describes our project. This will be an ongoing project for many years to come and we want it to spread to other BMX tracks throughout the country. Please visit our site for more information. Project Updates:
The team held a Safety Fair for the entire community. With the help of the Klamath Falls City Police, who conducted a safe riding DVD and course, The Commission on Children and Families, who joined us to enforce the importance of wearing a helmet when ever you ride, Information on Drug and Alcohol abuse in youth, the Klamath County Fire Department, and our team which held a bike and helmet inspection center and 'Speedy Lube and Repair'.
Our local Fred Meyer store was very helpful in blocking off a large portion of their parking lot for this event. We have ordered Jerseys for all our team members (I hope to have a final draft picture of the jersey by our final report), and we are obtaining racing pants in various sizes. We ordered more helmets and parts to build more bikes for our growing team. We now have 14 members, some are fully funded by the team, and some are partially funded.
With the starting of school and the importance of maintaining good grades, the team began 'Team Bucks'. Each member can bring a graded paper each week, and their report card at the end of each semester. They are awarded $1 per A, $.75 per B, $.50 per C. These team bucks can be used to purchase items (purchased by the team) or accessories for their bikes or racing apparel. I'm happy to say we are handing out many more $1 than anything else. It is now fall and our local track will soon be closing for bad weather conditions. That doesn't mean our team will stop for the winter. As a father/son or father/daughter project, each member is building a 'winter bike' that will be fully padded and have traction devices of their choice (either tires made studded or some form of chain or cable). These bikes will be used for 'ice racing' events this winter.
